It's the SIM that would be blocked by the service provider.

they could block the imei, but isnt that if its stolen usually? then blacklisted on uk networks etc

also jail breaking is fine to use the app store afaik
but if theres a new update and your on an older ver jail break yer get told new update etc
ive not got an iPhone though, as i refuse to buy some apple crap but thats another Story

bloke at work has one and jail broken etc w/o any issues

jail breaking wont help if the phones imei number is barred

You can always call a network provider and tell them the IMEI number so they can check if it's reported stolen/lost.

Technically, yes the phone can be blocked, but the SP wouldn't normally do this for someone not paying their bill. They would disconnect the SIM.

There isn't any way of knowing if the phone is still on a contract.

if theres an app update on an app u installed with cydia lets say u cant do it thru the app store as it will ask u to purchise the app...but u can get updates throught a jailbroke app called installus or somthing like that.
mines not jailbroke now as i went to 4.2os which is the most usless update ever wish i never done it crash's more now than b4.
if a phone is jailbroke dont be put off buying it as u can soon just install the os again and it will once again be original but most unlocked iphones are only unlocked thru a jailbroke app called Redsnow i think it is...but as for the network thing think ur a bit stuck on that.

Yes O2 can unlock it if its locked to O2, 10 quid rings a bell but there may be a little more due to the vat increase

I deal with iphone repairs and I can confirm that if a phone is barred ( reported stolen ) then it will not make or recive calls, some networks will allow data usage or txt but that's about all.

Most iPhone can be unlock ie, orange, o2, vodaphone, t-mobile. I can provide this service but not cheap I'm afraid but it's done direct from apple so it's a life time unlock.

sorry buddy, 3 network is not supported for direct unlock at the moment, you would need to jail break it with cydia but it does depend on the software version you are running

im sure this link will help everyone :-)
