Much the same as any car really but pay attention to head gaskets its engine out to repair,so check theres plenty of anti freeze in the water and it hasnt been dilluted down with topping up and keep a eye on the temperatures

only on highly tuned engines .......but why get that high a mileage car ,my advice would be to pay abit more for a lower mileage car .
As the higher mileage cars are prone to more things that can go wrong and that = cash

like above check antifreeze, makesure theres no rattles or knocking when starting from cold, should have had a cam belt recently due every 60k clutch is probably going to want replacing if it hasnt been done, 4 pot brakes are prone to sticky pistons and if he seems honest ask about induction kits that might have been on as they are maf killers other than usual car checks just have a look at everything. most important do an hpi check good luck.

its got a mushroom filter on it actually i take it thats best to take off instantly.....i thought the belt was due every 45k on 1998 models? wat sort of price would u value it at? the only mods it has is a fmic with alloy pipe work an exhaust which is a but ott really and a mushroom filter which looks like its best to get off asap. the guys had it since march last year mot is untill sept

with a front mount you need some kind of induction kit due to pipe work, value wise iv seen them going for around £2000. ask if it has been re-mapped to cope with the mods personaly i dont think its a major problem if it hasnt but normaly its best to have it mapped might feel a bit laggy if not.

What mods does it have, if any? And has it been mapped for any engine mods? If not, I'd walk away.

Check suspension for leaks and bushes for clunks and squeaks.
Check boot and front carpets for damp. Wheel well is a prime spot.
Check rear wheel arches at top for signs of rust or repairs.
As noted look at oil and water.
Tyres need replaced in fours really, so look for any with odd wear.
When driving, gearchange shouldn't be stiff or notchy, clutch should be reasonably easy to use, not too far up, or down to bite point.
After driving, sniff engine: burning oil smell says rocker cover gasket probably leaking, but could also be turbo. Look for signs of smoke on acceleration and overrun, once engine is hot.

Oh, and as above: if he's fitted an aftermarket dumpvalve or filter, think to swap back to standard asap.

My worry would be if its had a fmic chances are the exhaust has been decatted as well which without a remap is not a good thing

Unless youve got somone that really knows there scoobys with you dont touch it,the trouble is if you get caught they can be a money pit.If its your first one you will be better of going for a lower milage standard one and doing any tuning yourself,at least you will know what youve got,id sell the focus and buy standard if i were you its a lot safer

As someone has already said someone has spent a fair few quid already and cant see why they wouldnt spend that little bit more on a remap to get the best from ther hard earned, what I would say though is the rear bumper doesnt seem to be fitting very snugly to the arches which may mean they have been repaired or botched and I can asure you from experience that this can be very expensive
