New Help Please :)

hey guys im off to look at a scooby come next weekend its a 1998 impreza 2000 turbo 130k on the clock looks really tidy body work wise is there anything i need to look out for befor agreeing to take it? im doing a swap with the guy with my focus as he wants a diesel for work and well ive wanted a scoob since i was a teen and only now can i afford the insurance. any help would be great cheers

Much the same as any car really but pay attention to head gaskets its engine out to repair,so check theres plenty of anti freeze in the water and it hasnt been dilluted down with topping up and keep a eye on the temperatures

Stomppers 04 February 2011 09:04 PM

i take it there prone to failing then??

bighead 04 February 2011 09:09 PM

only on highly tuned engines .......but why get that high a mileage car ,my advice would be to pay abit more for a lower mileage car .
As the higher mileage cars are prone to more things that can go wrong and that = cash

Stomppers 04 February 2011 09:18 PM

things aint so bad if they go wrong suspention and genral maintince bits i get all at trade price and work in a garage to fit them only worrys i got are internall bigger problems to look out for....i didnt think 130k for a 98 car was to be wen my 51 plate focus is on 170k now lol but that is an ex lease diesel

like above check antifreeze, makesure theres no rattles or knocking when starting from cold, should have had a cam belt recently due every 60k clutch is probably going to want replacing if it hasnt been done, 4 pot brakes are prone to sticky pistons and if he seems honest ask about induction kits that might have been on as they are maf killers other than usual car checks just have a look at everything. most important do an hpi check good luck.

Stomppers 04 February 2011 09:36 PM

its got a mushroom filter on it actually i take it thats best to take off instantly.....i thought the belt was due every 45k on 1998 models? wat sort of price would u value it at? the only mods it has is a fmic with alloy pipe work an exhaust which is a but ott really and a mushroom filter which looks like its best to get off asap. the guys had it since march last year mot is untill sept

paul 439 04 February 2011 10:28 PM

with a front mount you need some kind of induction kit due to pipe work, value wise iv seen them going for around £2000. ask if it has been re-mapped to cope with the mods personaly i dont think its a major problem if it hasnt but normaly its best to have it mapped might feel a bit laggy if not.

alcazar 05 February 2011 11:51 AM

What mods does it have, if any? And has it been mapped for any engine mods? If not, I'd walk away.

Check suspension for leaks and bushes for clunks and squeaks.
Check boot and front carpets for damp. Wheel well is a prime spot.
Check rear wheel arches at top for signs of rust or repairs.
As noted look at oil and water.
Tyres need replaced in fours really, so look for any with odd wear.
When driving, gearchange shouldn't be stiff or notchy, clutch should be reasonably easy to use, not too far up, or down to bite point.
After driving, sniff engine: burning oil smell says rocker cover gasket probably leaking, but could also be turbo. Look for signs of smoke on acceleration and overrun, once engine is hot.

Oh, and as above: if he's fitted an aftermarket dumpvalve or filter, think to swap back to standard asap.

no its not been mapped for the fmic or mushroom filter and it says its got a dump value so basicly ur saying its got evrything it shouldnt have?

bugeyejohn 05 February 2011 01:43 PM

My worry would be if its had a fmic chances are the exhaust has been decatted as well which without a remap is not a good thing

Stomppers 05 February 2011 02:27 PM

it had its mot in sept and full service history up untill 105 k and on 130k now... startin to think this maybe one to walk away from then

scoobyd00999 05 February 2011 02:31 PM

Walk away now

Stomppers 05 February 2011 02:33 PM

ok advice taken and im walking away from this one

thats the add

s c o o b y 05 February 2011 03:01 PM

with all that work done if its not been mapped defo walk away !!!

bugeyejohn 05 February 2011 03:16 PM

I doubt very much somone did all that work without doing the one thing that will give you the most power a decat, they were proberly put back on for the mot and left there for selling

Stomppers 05 February 2011 03:41 PM

so all in all ud all walk away from that one then??

bugeyejohn 05 February 2011 03:49 PM

Unless youve got somone that really knows there scoobys with you dont touch it,the trouble is if you get caught they can be a money pit.If its your first one you will be better of going for a lower milage standard one and doing any tuning yourself,at least you will know what youve got,id sell the focus and buy standard if i were you its a lot safer:thumb:

Mikej857 05 February 2011 05:57 PM

As someone has already said someone has spent a fair few quid already and cant see why they wouldnt spend that little bit more on a remap to get the best from ther hard earned, what I would say though is the rear bumper doesnt seem to be fitting very snugly to the arches which may mean they have been repaired or botched and I can asure you from experience that this can be very expensive

Stomppers 05 February 2011 07:57 PM

cheers guys ive told the guy that im not going to bother with it as u all seem to say the same and to walk away from it and ur going to know a lot better than i do. shame cus i did really like it but cant let my heart rule my head. :(

Stomppers 05 February 2011 08:05 PM

this sucks i totally wanted this car!

SpecDscooby 05 February 2011 08:24 PM

Go get it then, dont be lead be your own man....then question why you posted on here in the first place if you were'nt going to listen to the advise given mate...tough one, but plenty around that want a px for a diesel.....

bighead 05 February 2011 08:28 PM

as above ....plenty cars out there and its a "buyers" market now
