I had a GT GTI 150bhp MY02 and then bought a 170bhp FR Leon. I had the GT remapped to 195bhp / 285lbft and it went like stink. Had it timed up Brunters and it did 6's to 60mph. It was great fun as a daily driver.
The FR was nice (same engine as you are referring to), but it was not as responsive or sharp as the chipped GT. You need to get them remapped and get rid of the torque limiters imo. Unfortunately I never had it for long as it got nicked!

I drove me sisters Golf 170 tdi couldn't believe the torque it was doing 125 and still showing 35mpg on the dash computer she wouldn't swap it for me scooby wagon.so many of the golfs look too similar with dodgy alloys as standard i'm reluctant to pay the money for a Golf as they do hold good value i would rather go for the Seat or maybe a Skoda.I had a go in a chipped Cupra r and that was rapid. But then i get in me blue wagon and nowt beats it for me and then i look back to about 6 weeks ago and it was ploughing through the white stuff no problem. Some decent powered front wheel drive cars won't even put their foot down in the rain.$ wheel drive all day.

I'd miss the traction, personally.
I driven various VAG TDis on the same 8P / PQ35 chassis, petrol and diesel, and with the TDis from 140bhp and above, they are all the same; Fine in the dry, but just silly when trying to make progress on a wet road. TC holding back the power all teh time, or lighting up an iniside wheel if its off or caught snoozing.
I bet most of the factory engine map is limiting the power and turbo spool up rate in the lower gears to counteract this.
VW need to offer haldex AWD on more of thier models.

i had a go in a gt tdi 140, it was very very quick for a diesel, turbo was always on boost and it pinned you back, very good around the bends too, the 170 can only be better, and the 170 remapped

ive owned a gt-tdi.
i loved that motor, you can get 4x4 the quatro type. or 4 motion on the vws. same really
and yes, you can get them mapped to higher power levels.
no where near the scoobs. + theres issues with to much power through the front wheels
you get loads of torque stear from them, i know the scoobs you do alittle
still, great cars

I had an Audi A3 TDi Quattro Sport as a company car some years ago, 130bhp and it went like stink but the best MPG I ever got was 48MPG.
I had it remapped to around 170BHP and the MPG went up to 52, it was a very good mile muncher and shamed many bigger BHP cars.
Now that was a proper performance diesel car unlike the Honda cheese wedge.

not putting subaru down, but it was audi that first came up with 4x4 rally cars. and kept winning
ford & subaru came after.
the fact vw have audi under there wing, audi 7 the vw cars are about the same.
4motion is the same as quattro.
you can do more with a subaru. but as an every day car
vw/audi cars. i was getting 52.3mpg out of my tdi
to be honist, i wish i never got rid of it to

My daily driver is a Mk5 Golf Gt tdi 140 & i have fitted a miltek exhaust system, K&N panel filler & a remap power figures are 190bhp & 420 NM torque.
My golf has saw off some fairly fast cars like the Clio 197, Civic type r, & its even gave an standard newage wrx a scare in the past.
Heres a few pics.
Im replacing the Golf this week with a BMW X3 2.0d (177bhp) M SPORT.

Just be warned that the turbo is pushing its limits at around 180bhp, one of the guys here at work has had his 2ltr gttdi 170 remapped and the turbo went pop, took it to a speciallist and they said it was common on the 2ltr engines as the turbo's cant handle it, change your turbo and your away though but not a great lover of that 2ltr tdi engine tbh

That does not make sense with regards to warrantys etc. You don't sell car that is that close to the edge of it's reliability envelope...... unless it is a Rover!
I can certainly say the previous 150bhp PD engine was awesome. I had that running at 195bhp for over 100,000miles (I think it was at about 130,000 when I flogged it). In fact the company that mapped it was Motorsport Developments..... Stu who is the administrator on ScoobyNet.

170bhp is useless to me if I cannot apply it in everyday driving situations all the time everytime regardless of conditions. Wet roads being the main one. Sure I can lift off the throttle, and pussyfoot around but then I'm only using 100bhp...makes the extra 70bhp a bit of a waste if it can only be used in teh dry (which realistically I don't see much of in the UK these days ).
As for weight; Its bit trivial in a car that is already very heavy for its size. AWD weighs less than having a adult female in the passenger seat. In fact a DSG gearbox is also a weight disadvantage, not forgetting VAG still use pig-iron engine blocks in their diesels (PSA now use aluminium, as do Merc and BMW). The fact a mkV Golf Diesel isn't that much lighter than a E60 5 series BMW puts it in to perspective. The tiny bit of extra weight of the AWD is a bit trivial considering the advantage it gives in being able to apply all the power in almost all weather conditions. (plus 4motions have a nice and rigid alloy rear subframe so have better chassis rigidity, FWD versions get some cruddy tubular steel).

A good recalibrator will not remove these limits, only change them to be "less limiting". The available traction is quite easy to retain with some carefull fly by wire recalibration. Drive one of my remapped FWD diesels compared to someone who hasnt a clue and see which is the better car regardless of what rollers may tell you. LOL
