Default The Age Old Question , What Oil for my car

Hi all,

Ive done numerous searches on here regarding my question, and everyone has there own opinion etc but I'm looking for some help. I have an 03 WRX that has been serviced by Subaru using there standard fluid changes etc every 10k miles. I have recently had my car serviced at 40k miles then remapped to around 270ish and its coming upto to 45k Miles. I was going to change the oil as it seems the done thing with modified subarus but which oil to go for. It has been using Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 the last two services, and I was wondering whether to stick with this or move to a 5w40 or 10w40 ? I was going to speak with Oilman regarding manufacturer of oil to get his opinion also.

Thanks

10/40 fully synthetic will give your mildly modified car better protection when hot compared to a 5/30. Personally I use 10/60 as recommended by all 3 experts who have fettled my car. Its largely down to personal choice and there is no definitive answer. Merry Christmas

i would recommend a 5w40 ester based oil for winter (10w40 ester in summer). Subaru want 10cst at their bearings, a SAE40 oil flows at 14sct at 100deg (an sae60 oil flows at 24cst at 100deg!)

Thanks for the responses folks, I'll probably look at some fully synth 5w40 in the new year and when its due a service replace it with some 10w40. I've heard Millers is pretty good, does anybody have any other suggestions ?

Merry Christmas, thanks for the help.

You can run the 5w40 all year round, not really an issue in our climate

I've just got hold of some millers for mine from Import Car Parts, there isn't really any other 10w-40 fully synth out there; Fuchs Titan is a good alternative if you go for 5w-40.
