Default selling my st for a scooby but not sure what to get

hi all i have a fiesta st and am looking at upgrading to a proper car.
i was looking at a evo but have been won over by the impreza i seen a few i like i have mostly liked the 5 door saloons what i noticed people call bug eyes but i dont no what model is best i want one between 2001 2005 i belive the one i like the sound of is the wrx turbo but being a ford man im not sure so would appreciate running costs approx i must do about 300 miles a week in my st costing about 60 quid and i service it properly once a year about 250 and various oil changes and spark plug changes threw out the year so wonder how a impreza will compare i expect it to be alot more but people i have spoken too have said they are not that bad pleae let me no your views thanks

you need to do some research mate

they are in age order classics, bugeyes, blobeyes, hawkeyes then the new hatches

there are sti`s which there are different versions of plus wrx`s which are both turbo but the sti is a better spec. you have to get it services at a scooby specialist because there is a certain way of doing the oil change. they are expensive to run, mainly petrol but tuning gets addictive and expensive

if you get an evo it will cost you a lot more to run they seam to need alot more looking after a bug eye is the one with the round lights and blob eye is next shape up think its only the front thats diffrent it wont cost you much more than the st to be honest service is not that bad millers cfs 10w 40 and filter are about 60 pounds plus delivery from scoobyparts ltd spark plugs 8 quid each air filter fuel filter about 20 then someone to fit it

stedee you have to get it services at a scooby specialist because there is a certain way of doing the oil change???

or you could just learn to do it yourself. fill the oil filter, unplug the crank sensor, crank it over for 10sec this will prime the oil pressure. then check level, do again if necessary. plug sensor back in and start as normal.

the earlier models have more of a raw driving feel IMO
you just need to go to the dealers and try not buy.

age may affect you, insurance on an STI is more than the wrx in most cases.

hi mate, i have a 2001 bugeye check out my pics, subarus are pricey to run but believe me they are worth it! The power and the admiring glances you will always get. My last service was £300 including NGK iridium plugs and you will have to change your oil and plugs every 6 months. They are really fast cars but also great roomy family cars.
Try and have a test drive in one if you can and believe me you wont need anymore advice, your mind will be made up.
Hope this helps

tbh i dont think they are expensive to maintain i bought my service parts for 100 there or there abouts but that is including a hks super filter, ngk f7's and pollen filter and the rest was genuine subaru oh and the oil was free from my last place lol mpg is around 28 once youve spent two months having fun not worrying about the fuel as for the car i would buy a blob eye sti but depends on your budget and insurance costs

1. You don't need to change the plugs and oil every 6 month. Oil if you want to, but certainly not plugs unless you caning it to death. The later Newage Bugeyes and Blobeyes are 12 months or 12,000 what ever comes first.

2. A Cambelt change is expensive and you'll not get much change from £500 if you shop around. But again it will depend on age and mileage.

3. Some later cars are in the higher VED bracket and depending on your age Insurance could be quite expoensive.

4. JDM or UK versions vary in performance and standard fitted items. The JDM are all 2.0l engines, the later UK cars and hatches are 2.5l but early ones are 2.0l.

5. You can add at least £30 a week to your fuel bill as well.

6. You'll buy a WRX and always hanker after an STi.

£500 for a cambelt change?! WTF.....most place are aound £230 for a cambelt change, as its a fairly easy belt to change as far as cambelts go.

Well the belt is between 100-120 quid, 3 hours labour at 50+ quid, also takes into consideration the fact that the pully isnt goosed because if it is, 500 quid easily

Remember the 2.5 uk car suffers from head gasket failer, idealy mate depending what you can afford, go for a jap import sti 2.0, a far far superior car, if you buy the wrx you will only yearn for the sti. I,d also advise that if you get a cam belt done ALLWAYS do the idlers with it, if you have any mechanical knowledge the cambelt is one of the easiest belts to change...

Parts from Ding Dong in China and fitted by your local spanner monkey. Ask a quality garage like Scoobyclinic how easy they are.

scoobyclinic only charge £189 mate -cheapest around!!

Trust me, theres are plenty more difficult cambelts to change than an impreza, its at the front of the engine for a start, beats having to drop an engine mount and struggling to see timing marks because the chassis leg is in the way.

I second that, Extremescoobies charged me £307 for a full service, including cambelt, including VAT. Not too bad at all really and thats for a JDM STI blob.

Dont bother I had a fiesta ST and should have kept it. It would be fully paid now and it was a great little car. If you buy an STI expect to be at the fuel station and expect servicing, tax and general wear and tear items to be more expensive. If you go WRX you will be bored after 6-12 months like you are now.

If its any conciliation, i had a Fiesta too before i bought my 03 WRX 6 months ago....can honestly say i still love it, its a massive upgrade and still plenty fast enough for me. Insurance is more and it drinks fuel, but i dont do many miles and am an apprentice mechanic so work i can do myself. Im only 23, and only an apprentice wages but i can still afford it. I do however still live at home and only pay £15 a week rent lol.

As most people get their belts change at a service, your still looking at nearly £500.

189.95 Belt
89.95 Oil and Filter
79.95 Max for plugs
29.95 Fuel Filter
49.95 Collant change
That's not including the pulleys plus the extra labour charges that will go with the extra work. All Scoobyclinic prices.

Not far off £500.

lol when you get your own place you will soon realise that most excessive purchase become a waste of money. If the market wasn't on its **** I would sell up. Even after a considerable payrise I think my views have changed on cars although I love cars the cost are becoming boring to pay.

Oh i agree your heading towards that price if its included in a full service as well, but not as a price for just a belt change.

Yeah but thats not what you said ..

No mention of including a full service in that price, bit misleading.

Cambelt prices at Extreme are as follows: £191 for classic, £227 for newage.

m@t STImulation stedee you have to get it services at a scooby specialist because there is a certain way of doing the oil change???

or you could just learn to do it yourself. fill the oil filter, unplug the crank sensor, crank it over for 10sec this will prime the oil pressure. then check level, do again if necessary. plug sensor back in and start as normal.

the earlier models have more of a raw driving feel IMO
you just need to go to the dealers and try not buy.

age may affect you, insurance on an STI is more than the wrx in most cases.
sorry to hijack this thread but i changed my oil with out disconnecting the crank sensor on my 95 wrx sti but i did fill up the oil filter, what knock on effect will this have and where is the crank sensor on my car so next time i do it properly??? thanks

Iv just renewed mine at £1049 but im already 23 so thats a good quote imo, heard lots of stories of people much older on here paying more than that.

different internal changes in the engine, different turbo, slightly different exterior looks (bumpers spats, fog light covers, different skirts and bigger spoiler), seats are alcantara, has 6 speed box, bigger brakes, slightly bigger intercooler.

However theyre obviously more to insure but also a fair bit more to buy - but are all round better and quicker. Not that the WRX is slow by any means tho tbh.
