Default 17" on a classic, what tyre size ?

Hi

I'm going to order myself some winter tyres today and was just wondering about sizes

The current ones are 215/40/17, I seem to be struggling to find many winter tyres with such a low profile, If I increased the size of the tyre would it upset anything ?

Or should I just fit winter tyres to the spare set of 16" that I've got and have a nice sized sidewall, IMO low profile ruin the ride anyway

Opinions ?

I preferred 215/45/17s to the the 40 profile tyres and had no issues with clearence

I was told the extra rolling radius may upset my speedo ?

I think I would prefer the 45's tbh, 40 is far to small !

If anything it is more accurate with the 45 profile, I have switched from 225/45/17 (speedo was accruate on the dot into triple figures) now have 215/40/17 and it is out by 10mph at triple figures. Go figure

I'm in agreement with Banny, I run 215/45/17 on my 17" wheels and the speedo is pretty close to my sat nav figures.

But, I think with winter tyres the narrower the better as far as I can make out.

+1 for the above ,P1 was on 17's std and that had 205/45/17,i have 225/45/17(2 cm wider) on my classic, and only experience rubbing on extreme cornering and speedo reads what my road angel and sat nav say.The 16' equivalent is 205/50/16,so 215/45 /17 should be ok
