Default vf28 on uk turbo 99 - good idea?

currently have the folowing mods:-

ported headers
harvey up pipe
hks exhaust & decat
ecutek
standard td04
helix clutch and flywheel

283bhp 300ft/lb

Will it be a good idea to change the turbo for vf28 and remap again?
If so what should I expect?

thanks for any replies in advance.

Yes mate, well worth the change up to a vf 28, slightly slower spoiling to the td04,but the midrange is awesome. Just bear in mind turbo is 10+ years old now , so try and buy a decent one. No need to change injectors as my 99 uk turbo made 317 bhp/316 lb/ft and no where near maxing out. You might want to consider a 3 point boost solenoid if you do not already have one.

vf 35 will be double the price of a vf28 for potentially 10 -20 bhp more, and slightly slower spool up ,and a sc36 more than 4x the price. Some good examples out there if you know where to look.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IHI-VF28-Turbo...item35addacde9

if it were me i would be making an offer on the one below:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IHI-VF28-Impre...item43a33931dc

Failing that if you do want to opt for a vf35 ,then this might be worth a look,my mate bought a turbo off these guys 6 months ago ,and really was in vgc.

Totall agree with the above.
I fitted one on my RB5 along with a full 3" decat, uprated plugs, 3 port, Free flow panel filter, Walbro pump and 99 Ron. Mine made 330/310
I bought mine for £200 and sold it for £200 12 months later.

I wouldn't go for a V28, can be fragile.

Worth adding a TD05-16g to the list of turbos to go for. Cheap, tough as old boots and enough to blow your gearbox into next week

All depends on your target and budget. You'll need supporting mods too.

Another vote for the VF28, delivery on a good one is excellent, my spool up was across only 500rpm, from zero to 18psi boost, so an almost vertical torque curve, made a very driveable car. Personally on a uk turbo I wouldnt go VF35 unless you budget for a better IC, such as a newage STI TMIC, plus not sure how long teh box would last with the torque.

I know a few people who have run VF28's on a MY99 UK Turbo. The '99 comes with 440cc injectors as standard, so with a decat, panel filter and remap you should see 320ish bhp. Might be worth upgrading the fuel pump to a Walbro if you have not already done so.

I have had a VF28 recently fitted to my '99 UK Wagon, along with a H&S sports cat and 2.5" exhaust, panel filter and walbro pump. It makes 297bhp with 330ft lbs torque. Completely transformed the car from standard, so I would definately recomend if you can find a good one.

I had a vf 28 and then a vf 35 turbo fitted to my last car, a MY00 Uk classic. The car had a newage sti intercooler fitted along with uprated fuel pump, 3 port boost solenoid etc and a remap .In my opinion the vf 35 was the better turbo and I had no problems with my gearbox although the standard clutch didn,t last very long. Sorry tidgy ,but everyone is entitled to there opinion, and All the stuff i have bough off ebay has been 5*****and dirt cheap,my turbo cost me £150 and i drove to meet the guy,so i could see exactly what i was buying. It was mint and before you could say "how much" ,my honda civic was wheelspinning up the road . Also bought a samco induction pipe for £35.00,sti wagon boot spoiler for £20.00,a brand new wrx backbox which had delivery mileage on it for 0.99p,due to upgrading to ppp and the bloke lived 9 miles away(he was gutted),4 x oz superleggera's with 7mm tyres £85.00(1 damaged& repaired ,

as well as an afterburner vortex 4 months old for £50.00

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=220653930171

So some good stuff to be had off ebay if you know where to look

Also recently a lad of here bought a vf28 off the p1 owners club ,which was in good condition ,it lasted 3 weeks and he is now taking his car back to std .The vf28 i bought of ebay made more power than his ,more torque and more importantly still going like it was made yesterday

Heres the powergraph for my MY99 uk turbo, not an ideal powercurve ,but the car felt 'savage' when on boost:

Here is the powergraph from a mates MY2000 uk turbo with damn near identical mods, bar exhaust and induction pipe, both using vf28 turbos

My latest MY2000 has the exact same mods as my 99 car but power delivery is much smoother, and it made more power/torque than the 2 above

an adjustable fuel pressure regulator might give more of a safety margin on your 440s

440s are fine up to about 340bhp, no need for a fpr at this level. Would do the fuel pump if you have not done so already

will start having a look around at VF28's on ebay - thanks for good advice Midnight & others.

Can I ask will my engine and box cope with 320ish bhp? Also would a vf35 be better if I get an Sti intercooler of will it totally kill the box and stress engine too much??

If he had warned me that the big ends were knocking instead of letting me drive the car away with a fcuked engine then I wouldn't need to say these things. He may be a great mapper, but I would not use him again, which is no loss to him I'm sure as he has plenty of satisfied customers.

Engine and box will cope with 320 bhp easy, vf 35 are good for up to 340 - 350 bhp so yes you will put more strain on the box,but should be ok if you dont 'cane ' it everytime you drive it. If you fit a sti intercooler off a newage, then you will need to mod it slightly to fit your classic and your std scoop will still direct air to the back of the intercooler,so no point imho espcially at the power levels your looking at.

+1 for the above ,bob is a real gent and mapped both my cars, when you take your car to any mapper it is at your own risk,so if you suspect your big ends were on there way out ,then really you should sort that first, before going ahead.I can understand you might not be happy but slating a guy who has several 1000 happy customers is not the way imho.

Great turbo and a very good upgrade for a UK car.
With a heavily modified engine I squeezed 360bhp out of one of these but it was wringing its neck. I would suggest an uprated fuel pump and a proper FPR such as fuel labs or SX. Just be mindful though that you'll be approaching new gearbox territiory as the UK 5 speed is the weakest of the lot.

It's an STI one, stronger than a UK one but only just.

I'm perfectly aware that mapping any car to produce more power can cause that engine to fail, I wasn't expecting the engine to last too much longer with 80k on the clock & asking it to produce 320bhp. What I take issue with is not being told by Bob that the car had a fatal engine fault, instead he happily took my money & let me drive away without any warning. If he had told me I could have atleast been forewarned.

I don't doubt that he is a top guy/great mapper/all-round font of knowledge concerning Impreza tuning. What sets businesses apart is how they deal with customers when things go wrong. Once a company takes the **** with me I won't use them again, no matter how many satisfied customers they have. I've had things go wrong when dealing with APi & Engine Tuner, however, both companies bent over backwards to make things right, way over the level of customer service I would expect. This means I am happy to recommend both companies to any friends, family, random internet strangers

Things go wrong sometimes, we are all human after all. Lying to a customer is not on, no matter how many satisfied customers you have.

Its all water under the bridge now as the car in question is now a forged 2.5 & running 450+ hp

API have just removed my STi 5's VF28 and TMIC/DV. All were working perfectly prior to removal. My car is only showing 44k miles!

Interested?

i have the vf28 fitted on my MY03 wrx, with a sti top mount, de-cat up pipe, 550cc injectors and a 3 port solenoid- just had a remap from duncan at racedynamix after fitting the intercooler. the vf28 is a great little turbo for the money (vf35's are expensive at the mo) spool is great and marginally better than a vf35- foot down in 4th or 5th an 2k revs, by 2,5k its got half a bar, 1 bar by 3k and full boost of 1.4bar at about 3.3k revs, its so smooth and pulls like hell to the redline. it picks up at low revs very easily, my old td04 wouldn't like anything below 2k revs in 3rd or 4th, but now will happily poodle around in town at 1.5 k and quickly and smoothly picks up. its making about 330/300 (yet to dyno) needless to say im very happy
