Default ECU confusion - please help

Hi guys,

I understand that my MY2000 UK impreza turbo requires a stand alone Apexi, ECuTek or such like ECU to get a decent remap and jump in power.

I also understand that a "stage 1" just could be putting in the 99/00 UK prodrive ECU (and hardware)

But I saw this on the bay...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Wassat then

Sorry if its a dumb question

If im reading your post correctly and your car is a uk turbo 2.0 manufactured in 2000 it will be able to take an ecutek remap..

Yep correct, I think I said that in my post, obviously though the prodrive is way cheaper (albeit less power), the question was about the eBay one, what is it and would it help / fit?

Prova are a japanese tuning company so I would expect it to be mapped for 100 RON fuel and an aggressive map.

tbh the Ebay add doesn't really inspire confidence

You understand wrong..

Why buy another ecu, when ive stated in post#2 that your ecu can be remapped. Unless you want more than 1 map..

The cost of a ecutek remap is HIGHER than replacing the ecu with a prodrive one.

If the eBay one I asked about had worked and resulted in a safe but useful gain, this too would be way cheaper than a remap.

Perhaps my use of the words "stand alone" caused some confusion in your perception of my understanding.

No need to go slow for me.

Well phone duncan and get the same map only done opensource without the licence for £300.

You wont find an apexi or simtek for less than that or you being the right clever **** you might.

the problem with the jap ecu is it will be mapped for at least a wrx maybe even a sti, so to get it to run with your car you will need the appropriate turbo and maf and maybe injectors if your car doesn't have the 440cc/yellows already fitted, the problem with the prodrive ecu is that you cant go out side of there mod specs without running into trouble ie there is no point in buying one and then putting a downpipe on and induction kit because it will over boost.

Yep, gotcha!

My car is the same spec as prodrive with the exception of the Y pipe, so its the easiest / cheapest option for me.

I'd love a remap (Apexi / ecutek etc), but just cant afford it.

Mind you I have read on here that its (proper remap) the only way forward if there are plans to continue to modify and upgrade hardware - which fits perfectly with what you say

Thanks for the reply

I cant understand why you would want to buy an ecu and stick it in your car without it being setup properly for your car.. You have an ecu which can be mapped opensource for £300 or tek'd for £600.

But your looking to just buy an ecu and stick it straight in your car. You dont have a clue,

Look forward to reading your " Ive blew my car up thread".

No Flakey, I am asking a question of the community here about an ECU on eBay which I didnt recognise, trying to establish if it would work for me. Your peers have helped me to establish that it wont which is great and that saves me buying the ECU and blowing up my car!

"Prodrive Spec" means nothing when you are talking maps....just take the PPP as an example of that- each map has to be specific to each engine- no matter if they are the same model/spec.....I think that is what is trying to be put across here so let's stop trying to rip the **** out of eachother here huh??

For many reasons, the biggest in this case being there is no open source/free to download sw for 99/00

My car is the same spec as the my2000 PPP prodrive cars except for the ecu.

So it does mean "something" allsop.

Chris,

You appear to have asked a question and have then jumped at anyone trying to help and advise you like you know best already?

No offense intended but people are only trying to help

None taken Simon, infact I thought I had thanked both my94wrx and myblackwrx for their answers to my "actual" question, that being about the eBay ecu.

I have discussed with you and several other mappers my car's ecu options via PM and in person and I hope I have been nothing but courteous and have gained much from your eagerness to help and happiness to share knowledge.

Perhaps this time I failed to express my sincere gratitude at being told there was an open source £300 map available for my car........and of course being told by the same knowledgeable member that it was actually "me" who knew nothing.

My apologies go therefore to Flakey for not appreciating his help....

Same spec yes but still doesn't really mean that much in the world of getting it mapped etc. Each map needs to be correct for each engine/turbo/injectors etc. Etc.

Even from identical cars to identical cars....some engines will be stronger than others, some turbos will blow harder and some injectors will flow better than others. Especially when talking about 10year old cars.

As has been said all I am trying to do is offer up some information and advice- if you don't want to listen then don't, if I'm wrong then I'm wrong but you seem to generally be "arsey" with anyone trying to do the same (for lack of a better word...lol)

Anyway- hope you get something sorted sooner rather than later, bloody bomb scare all this map/ecu stuff with scoobies!!
