Default changing from 17-18" wheels. Any noticable drop in performance?

Hi all

I am going to upgrade the wheels on my 03 WRX from 17-18" am I likely to notice any drop in performance? I was planning on getting the remap done first but as I need new tyres shortly I thought I might as well do the wheels first with the remap not being for a few months yet.

Anything else I need to consider in the short term? Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks
Gary

Nope mine felt a lot better on 225/40/18 and Goodyear Assymetrics.

I went to 215/35/18 on my Classic. I much preferred it to my 17's as there was obviously less movement on the tyre sidewall so felt tighter. I had to avoid the potholes though as it's easy to ding a rim.

The wr1 comes from Factory with 18" alloys so i would have thought it was ok, I have 225.40.18

By the way mine is a standard 2.0 gx. Will the differnce effect performance etc. thanks

If you go up a width (in your case 215 to 225) then the general rule of thumb is that you go down a profile. So going by this you either have 215/45/17 or 225/40/17 to keep your speedo about right.

I haven't noticed any difference in my car but my speedo now pretty much accurate, it used to over read by 3-4 mph when 17s were fitted.

Great thanks mate thats really useful. I am changing from 215/45/17 to 225/40/18 so my speedo will be out bt just over 1 mile an hour which doesnt seem too much of a problem

Mine dropped one or two MPG due to the extra weight on the wheels, but it drives better

1. Increased rotational inertia, for every additional kg = 10 kg of increased inertial load.
2. Wider tyre = increased drag.
3. Taller wheel/tyre combo = reduced acceleration.
4. Cost (?) - joke !

I'd say pot holes to, feels great and nice and sturdy. Up to you really.

Dont really notice much in performance decrease, if there is any you will not notice it.

Looks good filling up the arches, but when i put 18's i did lower it slightly

also bare in mind the additional future cost of 18in tyres, compared to 17in. same brand in 17 i wanted were 90quid, they went up to 140 in 18, so say you replace all 4, with good quality tyres, your talking 550+ in tyres ALONE!

Good replacement alloys are often lighter than the standard Subaru ones
