Default vf28 turbo any good

hi ppl i was just wondering if a vf28 turbo would be a good upgrade from the standard td04 fitted to my bug with suporting mods and a map tweak as im not after great power just around 330 bhp and a more pull as i miss how savage my classic was compared to the softer bug .

VF35 / 34 or good old Td05 16G give good results on the bug WRX with supporting mods

I fitted a vf28 after my td04 ate a bit of flexi joint from my upipe! Already had supporting mods for around 270bhp on the td04, so got a map tweak and getting around 315bhp/330ftlb torque. The vf spools a little later than the small 04, but nothing major to be honest. Pulls alot lot better and right to 6k without tailing off as the 04 did. Much better 'push you in the seat' feeling.

Just a word of caution...........a well mapped TD05 16G or VF35/34 stands a good chance of lunching the Bugeye WRX gearbox LOL

Vf 28 is a good upgrade from the td04, it was fitted to the sti 5 type r/P1,and they are good cars in there own right. With a few choice mods you should see between 315 - 330 bhp, with a considerable increase in torque,& a car that is much more responsive mid range. Only thing to look out for is most vf 28's will be 10+ yrs old now, so make sure you buy a half decent one imho.

As long as there's no damage to the vanes or excess play in the shaft you shouldn't go too far wrong. Don't think there's too much that can be done as far as servicing it though - short of buying a new core.

Great all round turbos for the sort of power your wanting but, as mentioned above, be mindful of the strain on other areas.

Is there one you've seen? I can ask about on P1WOC if you want - there must be someone on there with a spare lying around somewhere.....

Great turbo, spools up quite quick and makes good power at the top end. Loved my old STi 6 with the vf28 until I changed it to a bigger turbo!!! Mine made 312bhp on my old Sti 6 with a full decat and filter with a ecutek map.

My Wifelet's Foz was running standard 168 BHP.

VF 28 Blower, Sti Injectors, Walbro Fuel Pump.

Remap last Friday @ Powerstation 261 BHP.

55% gain, not bad.

I've got a VF41 just over 300 BHP.

Regards.

A decat/sports cat, bigger exhaust, decent panel filter, uprated fuel pump(precautionary),3 point boost solenoid along with your vf28 should see you alright. These mods with a half decent engine should see somewhere between a 40-50 % increase in power.

Heres the power graph from my old 99 wagon. Not a perfect powercurve but this car had done 134 K

i would consider a andy forrest hybrid td04 which is what i went for, instant spool just like the standard td04 but pulls hard to 6k and ultra responsive right across the rev range, great for overtaking on m.ways etc. i have ported headers and uppipe, panel filter and ecutek by andy f and mine made 305bhp and 311lbs torque. oh and also full decat exhaust.

A VF28 would be a good step up the ladder much as Midnight says at post #5. Quick spooling turbo for the power capability, marginally slower than the TD04 but a good step up without lag.
Look carefully in the back of the exhaust housing at the penny valve area. The VF28 and VF35 particularly suffer from hairline cracking of the exhaust housing casting from the penny valve in the direction of the main exhaust bore.

As the crack spreads eventually a large chunk of the housing detaches. This is a bad thing and you need a replacement turbo as you have no boost. Prior to a chunk detaching you may have issues maintaining boost.

lol yeah obviously the chunks might upset things a tad regards mainting boost- could it intermitantly make the set boost target and others fail to reach max target boost, or just struggle to hold it?

Intermittent boost is usually a control issue. It is nothing to do with a crack on the back of the exhaust housing.
Get someone that knows what they are doing to look at it.
Has the car been mapped?
