Impreza turbo 2000 vs mk4 golf v6 4motion, advice
Hi guys,
Im new to scooby net,
basically i want some advice and positive prompting, atm i have v6 4motion golf mk4, 200bhp, iv loved this girl but tbh am abit bored now tho, i live out in the countryside now and feel it suffering abit, i have been thinking about my next car and am now set on a uk spec, around 1999/2000 year when they upgraded it slightly turbo 2000,
I wanted a car thats faster, has abit softer suspension (which the uk spec does have) and of cors 4 wheel drive which i love about the golf, epesiclly with winter coming up, and also the same insurance cat, hence the uk car, group 17 like my v6,
The question is, how good are they? Will it be noticeably quicker than mine ( all iv read is there atleast a second quick 0-60)
Also iv never owned a turbo car so how is the turbo lag on this model, bad? obv with the v6 its a really good engine, but i love the sound of the boxer and there suppose to be very good,
Will i make a good choice? Also would plan a slight remap to about 260 bhp after a while,
Cheers guys

Turbo lag on a standard turbo 2000 is hardley noticable as it only has a small td04, Great turbo for spool, but it runs out of puff at the top end, even with a full remap and a decat you could push it to around 270-280bhp. I can see the appeal of the UK 2000 with cheaper insurance and softer suspension etc, But if you really want something that will blow your socks off, and you can get the insurance Id go for a STi, 280bhp standard and a much better car all round.

Yeah fair doos, but i really cant afford a sti, i would love one but with petrol aswell it cant be justified atm, the turbo 2000 would be a nice one to start with, but it would be noticeably quicker than my v6? mine 0-60 6.9 secs and a turbo 2000 around 6 secs?
Cheers

I started with a Turbo 2000 - they are great cars, but the Jap WRX or STI are much better cars, listen to the voices of reason that have been in the same position you are in now

Smeddle. The Uk turbo's are a good start and yeah they are still a proper scoobie. The My00 classic will be a lot more of a rawer driving experience than your golf and a lot better fun especially in the twisties. Trust me it will put a huge smile on your face. After the uk turbo you then start setting your sights on a STI natural progression in my eyes. Like you im still on the uk turbo and still loving every minute.

Just the insurance will be to much, want to get a really mint turbo 2000, 2000 model, like 60k miles, for about 3k, just want a nice one to start with, always cautious with a import

i agree about the jdm, im 23 and had a 99 uk turbo 2000 when i was 21. It was pretty good, but then i bought a 97 wrx with full 3" turbo back exhaust, induction kit, coilovers and mapped to 300bhp for £2500 and its a MUCH better car than the turbo 2000

Mine is a MY00 UK Turbo mapped to 330bhp. Can't help feeling like it is going to pop one day! Get an STi, have it remapped to UK Fuel and you will love it to bits, and it will take a lot more abuse than a UK one. It will wipe the floor with your Golf, and almost everything else on the road inlcuding 911s

Welcome to scoobynet!
If this is the case, I personally think once you get over the honeymoon period of the initial shove when it kicks onto full boost, the sub-2800rpm lag of a UK turbo vs a VR6 will annoy you. If you can live with that will be down to personal preference.
They are great once above 2800rpm but in direct comparison to a VR6, below that rpm they are dead in the water, think the low speed torque of a 1.6 Vectra and you get the idea. This combined with UK gearing just compounds it (especially 2nd/3rd gears onwards @ 2000rpm). You'll notice when you find yourself in the wrong gear or come to pull away from junctions quickly and find the turbo isn't ready. Ok, its not hard to give a bit of clutch slip and get it up going again, but for me it always was annoying (driving V8s and highly tuned normally aspirated cars spoilt me - instant point and squirt power at any rpm in any gear - heaven ). You will have to adjust your driving style to suit and be alot less mechanically sympathetic. However the rewards are once the turbo is up and running its great, and not even my R32 can match that.
Even with mods you won't get a UK TD04 turbo boosting properly below 2500rpm (not without proper antilag, which will kill it), so keep that in mind it will be something you have to live with.
I don't think it is softer than a 4mo, certainly my MY97 UK on 17" alloys was much more unsettled and fidgity than my mkV R32, with the latter being alot more settled and planted on the same bumpy back roads. And I'm under the impression a MKIV 4mo has softer suspension than a R32. So make of that what you will. But I think you need to have a good test drive first if comfort is part of your criteria.
But don't just get any JDM as they differ widely depending on model. For example a old classic 260ps WRX gives little advantage performance wise over the UK varients of the same year. If I was to get another JDM, it would be a late model STi type RA or IV onwards
If I was going back to scoobydom again, I'd look to modify a classic with a twin scroll turbo with a built 2.5 block - that should sort the low speed torque issues and alot of suspension mods to get it to handle properly. It still wouldn't have a crisp linear throttle response, but it would be as good it gets with a turbocharged engine.
I've moved the thread to scoobynet general; you'll probably get more feedback in there.

having had a heavily tuned Golf VR6 a few years ago and getting a MY00 UK Turbo, i never looked back. the scoob was putting out 240bhp and was as quick as you would want...for a while at least!...so i would say...go for it!

I test drove a Golf V6 a while ago - nice car, quite quick and all that, but just left me feeling cold.
Scooby should be a bit quicker (standard), and should handle better. But, most importantly (to me), it has much more personality.

Cheers guys for the reply, yeah i find the v6 quite boring, also another point, i saw the turbo 2000 is the same insurance group, but just phoned direct line who im with, and who i atm pay 900 a year for the v6 which is good (probs cos i live in the middle of know where) but they said they wont insure me untill im over 25 (22 atm) and have 2 years no claim,
So wot do i do, i want a scooby, where do i go, whos the best to insure a turbo 2000 with? or maybe if i go with a specialist will a sti import be much more expensive?
Cheers guys again

A friend of mine had a v6 motion when i had my 99 turbo i had a drive of it and must say a standard turbo isnt much quicker but a mapped turbo is a different kettle of fish but one thing i can tell you is you wont be dissapointed with the drive of the turbo take one for a test drive nothing comes close to the excitement a classic gives you , you have to drive one to see what we all mean .. my classic is now mapped and all i can say is it is a different animal lol , i now drive a blob sti ppp as i have the turbo wrapped up and tucked away for now lol, i do miss the drive of the classic but the missus dont lol as you will find out if you get a quick one they rip you missus's head off lol lol . good luck with the find .
