bizarre selling experience
well a viewer fly up from london to edinburgh to see my car on sunday, i picked him up at the airport, went back to my house. let him look over the car for ages and made him a tea, he didnt say much, let him look over all the paperwork ,etc etc. couldnt fault the car, asks how flexible i am on the price, i said im not, just taxed it and mot'd it, car is perfect etc. so then he wanders around again for ages, then offers me £250 less than im asking, i said no. he wanders around again, i offer to take £50 off so we are 200 pounds apart, he wanders around not saying anything, then says oh well then........... so i said you dont want it then?? he says no. do you know where i can get a cab from?? i call him a cab and leave him outside, door goes, i think here we go, playing games, he left his bag in the car. so i gave him it and off he goes. taxi back to airport circa £30, flight back to london £££££ etc. for the sake of £200. ill be honest i was gobsmacked, never have i had an experience like it, was a bit surreal. he did admit it was a lovely car, which was about all he said actually, just goes to show i suppose.

Bit strange that For the sake of £200 it wouldnt be worth the trip. At the end of the day you have a price on the car and people should be prepared to pay the full price. If you get money off when your there then it's a bonus.

Yeah I agree - to be honest, after he had gone I would have been a little paranoid about him casing the place to rob it! It just doesn't make sense at all for the sake of £200!

if that was me i would have already have decided to buy it for the asking price before paying for the plane ticket, but still try to get the best price i can before i drove it away.

i expected him to offer less, its natural, but i wasnt planning on budging, and if he had discussed it on the phone prior to flying up i would of told him that and saved him the trip, but as he didnt mention it i also presumed he would be prepared to pay what i wanted. for the sake of £200, which he must of spent at least getting home, and without a cracking car. just weird.

ha ha i did the same thing but from london to manchester on the train for a nice bimota sb7 bike, like a **** i didnt take enough cash coz i really didnt have it, in the end the guy felt sorry for me and let me have it for what i had, sad but true!

It goes both ways you have just missed out on a genuine buyer for the sake of £200. For the chap to come all that way you could of give him the benifit of the doubt.
You might end up with the car for a good few months now and might even sell it for the same money he offered you plus the cost to run the car and insurance etc.
How much is your car up for?

Given your thread above, I actually find it quite strange that for the sake of £200 you didn't accept the offer.

I'm with the OP on this one... when you advertise a car at a price, that tells prospective buyers how much you want for it. It's not exactly rocket science, is it?

With cars I would expect around £250 quid's worth of wriggle space and expect the seller to have overpriced by that amount. In the same way there is always a haggle to be done in car showrooms.

When I bought my car (from here) I made an offer, he came back with an offer and we agreed if I liked it, that would be the price.. I drove the 500 round trip and loved it .. job done ..
I wouldn't think of travelling silly distance without the full amount or an arrangement ..

its no skin off my nose, the price is the price, you either want to buy the car or you dont, as i said before IF he had haggled a bit i may have met him half way, but it was his whole game playing attitude of not speaking that actually made up my mind that i wasnt going to budge. iv sold lots of cars and bought loads and iv never came across anyone like that before, the whole experience was just odd.

i want it gone, at the price i want for it, if i wanted 4 grand for it i would take 4 grand for it, however i want more than that for it. as i said, the tax was up at the end of this month so i could of left it but i retaxed it, and mot'd, so if i decide i want to hold out for my price thats up to me, and if he decides to travel the length of the country and not pay the asking price then thats also up to him. however if i had done the same and went to look at a car that far away i would of either agreed a price on the phone subject to the viewing or be prepared to pay the full price or as near to it as i had to to get it, rather than leave it and pay more that what the seller wanted to get home again????

The viewer travelled from that far & you only knocked off 50 quid. £250 hustle is not alot compared to some offers I have come across!!
If your advert states no offers then its another story. However if it does not state anything then any potential caller will assume the price is negotiable as its really rare to get asking price.

If he wanted it, he would have paid it, especially coming all that distance. The car wasn't for him, simple as that.
Richie.
Edit: actually, some people will only buy something if they get a discount. Perhaps he was just one of those. *shrug*

the car was priced at 4250.00 not ono, not ovno, but at 4250.00 he decided to fly up without discussing the price, which was 4250.00. he decided not to pay what i wanted, he decided instead to pay for another flight and taxis home again and not get the car. he didnt haggle, he didnt offer more than 4k, that was his offer. if he had said on the phone ill give you 4k if its a nice as you say i would of said no. save yourself the flight up because i want 4250.00. if he decides to travel that far its nothing to do with me, it surely means he really wanted the car, and would be prepared to pay what i wanted for it. thats my opinion anyway.

When i bought my car the buyer told me he wasn'y going to sell it for a penny less. Knowing this i told myself if i like it i'll pay it. I liked it, tryed my luck and offered him a little less, he said no and said have a think it will still be here. And i just said there and then, well i was always happy to pay the asking price, just was trying my luck ha, and deal was done.

if the car wasnt for him then why did he travel to buy it, it was the colour he wanted, he couldnt fault it. maybe he set his budget at 4k and refused to budge on it, who knows, i just wish he had said that before he wasted both of our times. iv got better things to do than get up at the crack of dawn on a sunday morning and stand around for over and hour as some stranger stands and looks at my car without saying anything.

So he came. looked at the paperwork etc, left without haggling...
Not wanting to sound paranoid ... but could he have obtained info off the V5 that he could now use cloning another Red Mica Impreza?
London/Scotland is a nice buffer between cloned cars
