Ok the other week i drove through some seriously deep water in my 99 Turbo Impreza. It was on the back road in the Highlands where i live. I have been through it before and it's a well known flood area. There was mist and dark so i couldnt see how bad it was.
I drove through and the water was very deep ahead of me i saw 4 parked up sorry looking cars(one a nice Aston Martin). Alarmingly no sign of water clearing and it was getting deeper. I revved the engine hard pushing on and noticed the lights disappearing under the water, the water was rolling over the bonnet towards the windscreen. I felt a horrible gut feeling that says your car is about to die and prepared for it cutting out. The car felt like a boat pushing through the water very surreal and quite horrible. There was no going back. The thought of leaving it in the water the garage bills possible the end of my beloved car all in my head....
Luckliy it made it all the way through. I checked it all out, all seemed good and drove it home(about 5 more miles).
The damage was...A dead fog light bulb, and my air con was making a grinding noise, so i removed it as i never use it.
Apart from that it's totally fine. I dont know many cars that would have taken this abuse. My car has amazed me many times with how tough they are, but this was it's finest moment. Makes me proud every time i drive the old girl i tell ye. Any one have any similar stories of Subaru hardness.

water over the front lights... you were a lucky man!

to be fair at least Subaru put the air intake at the top of the engine and not down in the lower front wing like most other marques!

 

How is that possible ? the air in take would have been under water ?

 

If he's got a cone filter the rad/grill would have provided enough of a dam to protect it?

 

Where abouts in the highlands? A similar thing happened to me between Huntly and Elgin.

 

Well no .. if its over the bonnet its over the engine ..

Unless it was only waves over the bonnet and he's got an air box maybe ??

The water was rolling up over the lights then spilling over the bonnet, not loads like a cm at most.
I have an air box and it was bone dry inside very lucky.
Where it happened was on the stretch of road you turn off to Aboyne on b974 Fettercairn road. Just before bridge at Strachan. I have seen it flooded loads of times often closed off especially last year, a few times i went through anyway and it wasnt that bad.
This time it was a bit dicey, there was a Rangerover on the other side sitting working it out. Must have laughed to see me driving through with lights under water like a total prat coming towards him. Still cant believe the car made it.

 

He was probably waiting for you to make it/conk out...if he started off in the opposite direction with you still fording the flood...you'd have stopped for sure

0.7m fording depth on my D3... closer to 1m if you keep moving as the air intake is nicely situated in a vacuum space behind the front wheel arch..so as long as you are moving forward, the water eddies round it

 

That's how I read it, a bow wave. The water was probably 'only' upto the lights!!! Would pour through the bonnet scoop though - should keep the intake temperatures down.
