Newbie help please, Type R or P1
Hi all,
I'm a newbie to this forum, and also to Scoobies, well hopefully will be shortly!!
I've owned a few Jap cars in the past, a couple of Gti-Rs and an Evo 6 RS and thought it was about time to see what these scoobies are all about!!
I really like the classic shape of the Impreza especially the 2 door variants of the Type-R and the P1, obviously the 22b is the ultimate, altho slightly out of my budget!! In your expert opinions what would you say was the better buy between the Type-R and P1 given a budget of around 6-7k?
All opinions are valued, even if you have other suggestions.
Cheers
Sam

You would get a lot more for your money with a type R, for 7k would get you a mint lowish mileage Type R, for the same money I cant see you getting a mint P1, as the ones that are really clean with lowish miles go for close to 10k or more, Have seen P1's go for 6k but there usually higher mileage and not as clean. And with the Type R you got more choice of colours and the trick DCCD.
Only downside with the type R insurance is more expensive due to being an import. also think my Type R will only do 130mph top end due to the close ratio gearbox, think the P1 will do 150mph due to the longer 5th gear???
If you do go for a P1, make sure you pick one that has has a engine rebuild, as there seem to be quite a few that have gone bang around 50k miles.
What ever you choose, there both great cars, The type R is sort of the same as your old Evo 6 RS which I used to also own, Havent driven a P1 so I cant tell you if its the same as a type R.

Yeah see where your coming from with regards to bang per buck, but I think the insurance could be an issue, had some quotes for around £800 on a P1 and I guess they would be higher on a Type-R!! It's cheaper to insure a Skyline!! Go figure!
I'm looking at a P1 thats had a rebuild at around the 50k mark (now on 70ish) which is reasonably priced. I wonder why they seem to fail at that sort of mileage? Is there anything else that you need to look out for with either the Type-R or P1?
That was the other concern with the Type-R being a close ratio similar to the RS, which can get quite arduous on longer trips.

Is there any other common problems that I should be looking out for?

And before someone tells you all the p1 have chocolate engines blah blah blah it's complete rubbish the engines are no different to the same year/model sti or type r, as many sti and type r's have gone bang and still to this day go pop, it all comes down to how they are treated/maintained and being based on an import if you buy one be surer to get it mapped and you will have no problems. Don't get me wrong a rebuild IMO is a must on any impreza albeit a p1 or type r just hold out for the right car and don't get blinded by the lights and buy a pup
If it were me being that I have had a p1 I would probably try a type r as I have not had one yet but it would be a nice v6 limited edition
Best of luck with what ever you get, you won't be disappointed

Guys You have well and truely confused me!! I think I am going to go the P1 route right now as I think the right car has come at the right time. Although there are plenty of people who think the Type-R is the way to go (which tbh I would generally head) I just think and hope that this P1 has arrived at the crucial moment for me!!
Wish me luck as I shall be travelling a fair distance to collect my P1 in the hope it is as described and in the condition I hope for!! I can't wait for the drive home, going to be awesome!!

I would say P1...... haha.
Horses for courses........do a search on here- this subject has been done to death!
In the end it ALWAYS comes down to how you feel driving each car.

Am I right in thinking that the Type-R's are forged internals?
Is this the same as the P1?
Either way I am going to pick up my P1 on friday!! YAY!!

There is no difference in the engines between a version 5 or 6 type R and a P1, the ecu's are also very similar with just more knock correction on the P1's for the UK fuel over the type R (otherwise the map is the same).
