Default Is my car a wrx or an early sti

hello all, i'm trying to find out as much info about my car as possible, using the details on the vin plate and referencing to this website
http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/wrx.html it seems my car is a 1994 M reg wrx sa sti.

The numbers for reference are:

Model: GF8B58D,
Engine: EJ20GDW1NE
Transmission: TY752VB3CA
Option code: MF

Can someone else confirm whether this is correct?

Any pics

AFAIK they took the WRX 5 door off the production line and modded it into an STi............hence the WRX and STi have the same applied model number.

Some pics mate.

it's not just the model number that tallys up according to the chart in the link i posted, the engine number, transmission type and option codes all say early sti too. Although i'd rather have someone in the know confirm either way.

Ignore the red mudflaps, white wheels and turbo badges, they're not staying, i've not long got the car.

we had this a wile back, the sa in the end wasnt a sti

it was a wrx sa
a cut down version anyways.

all the site i went on said it was an wrx sa sti, but if you check the ecu code, it come up as a lot lower than even a wrx, having only just over 10.psi boost

bottom line mate, there a slightly cut down version of the wrx mate.

I read that as...

5.Number of doors 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door wagon/hatch
6.Model type 8=WRX 7=RA type E=Sti D=Sti Type R & RA
7.Transmission D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD

this is what the table says

WRX - SA (STI)
GF8B58D
BX
BJ
MJ
MF

EJ20G DW1ND
EJ20G DW1NE
EJ20G DW1NE
EJ20G DW1NE

250ps
Manual
TY752VB3CA
TY752VB3CA
TY752VB3CA
TY752VB3CA

As per WRX STi 4 door, modified from production

tbh i have no idea what this means in terms of model etc, it's the only one where all my codes tally up.

on high boost it runs at roughly 16 psi which is just over a bar, it has got an ecu fitted that has been fettled with by a company called j speed from japan. low boost runs about 12 psi.

alot of the models were listed. but not proper with the b mate, the models are listed with other numbers & letters but.

this was the sa model with the 'b'.
the tables say they were sti, but the ecu's were just over 10 psi
alot of the early classics had the same boxes.

the sti models should have an 'e'
again, luck up your ecu code.
then check the psi level. it should be lower than the wrx models

Just look under the bonnet, the original run of STI's have all this "STI" stuff under there, plus it should be numbered, if it doesnt then it isnt.

C&K strike again! In fairness to them, when they were researching this information was very hard to find.

Im going to guess that its a WRX SA (B-Series 'Wagon, common SA colour and C&K site mistake over the SA's engine and transmission codes suggesting that its an STI); which was a launch model WRX 'Wagon with standard equipment deleted to make it cheaper. The upshot was that it was lighter too and this fact was played-upon.

yep, this is what i was pointed to. the thread went on for ages.
but i went on what was in the tables found on the net.
but as i was told, the ecu, if it was an sti would have more psi. where as the sa wagon had a lot lower boost.

the early wrx/sti's ect had the same engines, uptill the sti v2
the sa was made just before.

i'm looking for the chart i got with what ecu went in what, and what psi level they had

it was from bradford mate, the guy told me it had an engine rebuild and was pretty much still running in when i went to have a look at it.

Only way to know for sure is to pull the heads off and inspect as i have no receipts for the rebuild either.

ok cool, it does have all lightweight panels, the doors, boot and bonnet weigh nowt really. so basically in standard guise it's a bog standard wrx with no trimmings or frilly bits

Out of curiousity is it possible to plug and play another ecu as i want to change the one i have due to not knowing how it's been mapped etc?

The Sa's we have seen before didn't have side skirts, they have RA type unholed sills, so if this is a SA WRX then the sills have been tapped to take a skirt

Sadly no. Early Impreza are not mappable and a new ECU from someone like Jolly Green Monster is the only option.

Nope. The only panel that is alloy is the bonnet, the rest is paper thin steel.

Post a pic of the board ESL daughter board or a chip is the only real option for early classics.

Nope, not sure what you meant there, all i was saying is the panels are all light weight, the doors and boot on my pals uk 2000 weigh quite a bit more than mine.

I have a 1995 STi 555 Wagon and the doors are lighter than my mates 1998 UK T2000 I put this down to the cards rather than the skins

Micky is right. The only lighter panel available on any production classic is the aluminium bonnet. Its a common misconception, due to their rubbish thinness.
