If the Government weren't making so much money out of us which they would lose if they did it I bet that each car would have a receiver and each sign a transmitter transmitting the speed limit....
or just a speed restricter to 70mph like the lorries have to 56mph...

Flicked through a copy of (my 87yr old grandfather's) CSMA Motoring magazine over the weekend. If you can get access to a copy of it, it is worth it for the letters page alone
Letters this issue include..
*star letter* - asked why when max speed limits are 70mph, why engineers/car manufacturers don't engineer their cars to hit 70mph at max revs in top gear, with an 'overdrive' to aid acceleration.
its gets better...
One guy asking why anyone could want 'more' out of a car than that offered in a Peruda Nippa "great handling" "performance that is far in excess of anything anyone could want" and "far superior to his previous, and best to date, car - a MkII Escort Ghia
A guy complaining about car companys moving away from rectagular headlight. "it is a generally accepted principle that round headlights should be encased in a rectangular lense/cover to protect the aesthetic appearance" "so many cars now brake this rule and allow round headlights to be visable, ruining the styling" and don't get him started on the new C-Class's "pinched balloon" headlights - "don't Mercedes emply stylists anymore" and he is at a loss to understand "what Ford think they are doing with this futuristic and angled approach in a vague attempt to follow the (bad) styling of the rest of the car"
Good job he hasn't seen the MY01

I like the idea of hitting max revs at 70, just think of the fuel consuption First to second 10mph, into third at 25, forth at 40 and fifth at 55, redlining each gear change. Completely confused by the overdrive to aid acceleration, does he mean a nitros kit to add a little more oomph between gear changes? Would definately need a sequential gear box for that. Can just imagine trying to overtake anything, you would need a five mile clear straight

Jolly Green Monster,
The EU have already passed a law to permit national governments to enforce the fitment of governors to prevent cars exceeding 62MPH! (not even 70mph!). Currently, I expect the UK government doesn't have the appetite to take on the nation's drivers on that one (they've enough to do to stop us moaning about the price of fuel), but it is on the cards unless the UK motorists' normal apathy can be overcome.
Imagine the carnage resulting from everyone driving flat out at 62mph ....
