Default £14k to spend...

Hi All (my first post)

I have been looking to get a STI for awhile and reading on the forum and gathering info.

Have a few quick questions as i near the purchase.

I am looking to spend around £14,000ish and wondered what to go for, i could get a 2007 2.5ltr sti for this or is it better getting an older shape 2.0ltr STI. What are the differences between these cars and engines?

Looking to get a PPP version, anything i need to watch out for?

Also what are things to note when looking at them?

Any advice would help.

Cheers

You really want to look out for a JDM 2ltr twin scroll car, best engines out of the lot (not like these dodgy 2.5's that pop pistons or blow HG's for fun )

Why do you want a UK car?
The JDM cars have stronger engines good for 450-500bhp with out changing any internals or the worry of it going pop. You get rear tints and a rear wiper plus cheaper insurance and I forgot to mention the auto intercooler spray switch unless you like taking your hands of the sterring wheel while thrashing the car to push the button to cool the intercooler down.

Ive always bought uk cars as i thought imports had problems and when it comes to resale its not worth as much.

What are the main differences between imports and uk? are there any pros to buying uk car?

i would buy a blobeye sti ppp for around 10k and then keep the rest for mods which you will inevitably do when you get power hungry.

thanks Gary + Daz

OP - with a little bit of research you will find the spec of the JDM model is superior to the equivalent uk model.

it has the following over the UK Sti

Twin Scroll Turbo.
Equal Length Headers
Nitrided Crankshaft.
Revised Inlet System.
8250rpm Red Line.
Titanium Sti Strutbrace
DCCD-A (driver controlled centre differential with auto mode).
HID Lights (already 'detangoed')
STI Quick Steering Rack and Suspension tweaks.
Rear wash wipe.
Rear window Privacy glass
Revised (electro luminescent) instrument cluster - DEFI style
Electric folding wing mirrors.
Auto and Manual Intercooler spray

I would also advise you to go for a Jdm 2ltr car mate. It's a old myth about imports being harder to sell, difficult to get parts...ect. They are a better base car than the uk version period!

That used to be the case many many years ago.... now it can be totally the opposite as the people in the know will pay a premium for a JDM car.

i went jdm and have no regrets at all. Only thing is it has no scooby rumble but that is replaced by a superb scream when you open it up. I think i am even doing better on fuel than my old uk car. Only issue is finding one and i found they are more expensive to buy than a uk car of same year. Depends what you want as the uk car is still good as many will vouch for on here. Took me 6 months at least to find mine it appears my05 onwards were not imported as much as earlier cars. I found insurance no more than a uk car.

For me after having a jdm I would not want anything else but another jdm, as said much better spec'd as in toys (i.e auto spray etc) but the winning bit for me how much stronger they are internally over a uk car and can run much higher power if you wish to mod ( which 99.99999% you will want more) and the jdm can do it without a few grands worth of engine work.

One thing for me and is always an each to their own discussion is the loss of the Subaru burble, for me that's one thing that I love, it's almost the ora of the car which with a jdm you loose, you do get the as said 'scream' high up the rev range but why sound like an equivalent jap car such as an evo! Yes the early boost of a twin scroll is great but remember you do have a gear stick to drop a gear and get it on boost

If I get or should I say when I get another impreza it will be a jdm but I will get a nice big turbo and mods to run a single scroll and unequal headers (and other bits) to get the burble back! I just love the sound.

You said you wanted a PPP kit. On a new car you can apply the cost of a PPP kit and get better value for money and on a second hand car with a PPP kit you can go for a remap from a competant Ecutek mapper and end up with more power.

In all honesty there is nothing wrong with a UK 2ltr. Plenty of them around on the OE engines running good power with bolt on turbos. It would all depend on what you want out of the car and what you can locate at the time of intending to buy, and you can achieve for your money.

I can understand the OP being a bit reluctant about a Jap car over an import. Until you really get into the cars and understand the difference you would assume the UK car will hold its value better and be a better and maybe even safer and more "reliable" car more suited for over here compared to a "dodgy" import. I do have a UK car which I have had for six years, but if I knew back then what I know now I would have gone for a JDM car..........and for the price those T25's look like a bargain, wish I had the readies.

As an everyday car the 2.5 uk is hard to beat, especially with an exhaust & map. The engine is very flexible & the gear ratios are better suited to UK roads IMHO.

JDM cars are a better spec out of the box than a UK car, but don't overlook them, drive a few of each & see what suits your driving style.

I had a UK GC8 classic for 10 years (actually, I've still got it, SORN'd) and got a JDM STI (mk1 T25) about a year ago.

Given that 14k isn't usually going to get you a manufacturers warranty, and that OEM parts and servicing can be pricey (my latest amusing quote was 65+vat for the cabin pollen filter), there's no problem at all with a JDM car - as long as you don't mind doing a little more research into parts, just in case they differ.

If you do high motorway miles, the JDM STI gearbox is shorter; the tradeoff for the ability to be thrown down the road quickly, so drive both and decide.

I'd choose either of the Mk1 T25s, as Iain has been around longer than some garage franchises, and is willing to arrange warranties on cars that originate from him.

i don't think it makes much difference for day to day driving which car you buy

i have a uk sti that came with ppp but has all been removed with a full decat, larger turbo etc

i purchased mine because it was a bargin price but was really surprised just how great it is to drive.

i've nothing against jdm cars my classic was one

i would look at it this way;

how much are you wanting to spend overall and what power do you want ???

let's say 420-430bhp

de-cat exhaust
fuel pump (possibly)
turbo
injectors
etc

that is were twin scroll falls down for me, so expensive for parts over a v8 sti etc.

of course you do loose the rumble but that is a matter of personal taste.

In that case buy a ****e box for a few £K and keep the Scoob on the drive. The fuel bills will make your teeth itch!

That'll be a £60 fill up every 3-4 days. I would buy a 4k diesel for the commute and a 10k STI for the wekends!

Good luck with the search
