I thought the £442 price was for cars registered after 2006.....or 2005. Mine was £245 (2003 blobeye).

all cars registered after 1st march 2001 and before 23rd March 2006 have a maximum tax band of 'K'. mines a 'K' so £245

before 1st march 2001 it's £205 for cars greater than 1.6ltr.

after 23rd march 2006 it's upto band 'M', £425 for 12mnths and £233 for 6mnths

this is great, if you buy a new scooby today the first years tax would be £940

Yep, I think you just get hammered hard for the first year having a high emitting car then it drops in second year.

my jdm 05 is on plg so £205 per year, think it depends when imported, if imported 06 onwards they where originally taxed as per a new uk model, £435 tax, then recently government has realised imports treated unfairly so think they have gone back to build date rather than first uk registered date so any pre 06 cars will be max of £245 per year. Well until the budget anyway

i think there was a rethink based on actual year of registration on a foreign car in it's original country, and not year it was imported to the UK.

my emission codes are 342 GK/M so im sure it is in the high bracket and i should be paying £442 but im not going to complain but wondering if i am owed around £500 for the past 2 years where i were paying over the odds. whats everyone elses Co2 emissions reading off your log book.
CORRECT FIGURES FOR RENEWAL ARE £134.75 6 MONTHS AND £245 12 MONTHS.

You get a tax refund because your car is off the road so much getting the exhaust bits off

Yes... for IMPORTS it is NOW based on the year of manufacture.

I have ony just bought a JDM Hawkeye which is on a 55 plate (I am the first UK owner and first registration in the UK only last month). Registered PLG and it cost £205 for 12 months as part of the first registration process with the DVLA.

same as mine co2 on logbook states zero mine was imported dec05 but manufactured august 04 hence plg tax and an 04 plate issued at the time. Lucky to get a fresh import on plg though thought it would have been at the £245 level.

That seems to be the case now, thankfully. Prety sure this has been changed from the original proposals as you say.

Not sure if the link will clarify things at all, but it would suggest that imported cars if previously falling in category L or M (already registered here) would be moved to band K when re-licensed after April 2010 (providing they were first registered abroad before 23rd March 2006).

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice...g_roadtax.html

Just read the section re used imported vehicles, it will be clearer than anything I am saying.
