Default ITs gone. Scoob has been written off, where to go from here

As the title says, the car has be evaluated and it is 'uneconmical to repair'. Hit a mix of oil and diesel on wet road (the A1 at Stirling corner roundabout where the Barnet bipass A411 and the A1 meet - roundabout before M25 junction) and then after much drifting and fish tailing down the A1 caught the rear right wheel on the central reservation kerbing, which then swung the front of the car in the central reservation saftey barier. This happened a couple of times, then I re-gained control and pulled over on the verge.

Turned the car off (hadnt stalled it) and later tried to restart -to no avail. Cambelt jammed with plastic casing, although could of been bent valves and fried pistons (so i was told).

Advice needed / wanted on what to say to insurance comapany in the fight for a descent settlement. I valued the car at about £3000 - £3500.

Car details:

1999 Turbo 2000 with AC and prodrive rear wing.
Miles: 75,000
Mods - Cat back exhaust (afterburner centre and ninja II box)
Car also had 2 new Toyos on the front and new rear pads
Body work was in great condition, few small pin head dents that was it - no rust.
Inside - seats and cloth in great condition, plastics minor w/t.

Looked at similar cars on auto trader and ebay. They seem to be up for £3700 - £4000.

I have £350 total excess. Wanting to take at least £2650 home - is that realistic?

Thanks for all your help.

Maybe a factor in your crash having a mix of tyres?

Believe me, if you hit a patch of diesel you have no control over the car whatsoever.

You may get that ,but there is no way they will offer you over 3k imho. The tyres ,exhaust are secondary items and wont be judged when a final settlement figure is reached. They will look at what would it cost to buy a similar car with similar mileage in similar condition and wont use an auction site as a basis on to reach a final figure.

Just hope they dont use autotrader - which most insurance accessors do

.

I just got 4k for my Turbo 2000 with 78k on the clock .. and all it took was a bit of a chat with them about how I looked after it ..

They asked if I have receipts and service history which I did and then they paid out .. no hassle no problems ..

Other than losing my car of course ..

I not long ago had a claim on a car for a total loss. The insurers said I had to produce 10 adverts (proof of) as similar a vehicle possible to mine for sale and they would work off those if i disagreed with what they offered. So, start looking for as close a match as possible then if they do offer a price you dont agree on you have some valuations ready to fight with.
That was with Equity Red Star through Adrian Flux btw.

Lou

Sorry to hear about your car as well, I know that area well too.

Thanks for all the replies guys

I had new Avons on the back which were in very good condition. I doubt tyre brand made the difference, as the front of the car was also drifty as well. The fact that somone else did exactly the same as me, on the same stretch of road a couple of minutes after me, confirms that it was the unexpected road conditions which caused the write off, not my driving!

I've managed to drive the car through last years winter -snow, ice and black ice without trouble (1st day i drove the it was through snow and locally icey roads - adrenalin was pumping!).

As for getting examples for how much the car is worth - im already on it, got about four or five at the moment. The insurance should take into account this isnt just an ordinary sallon - its a sought after perfomance car which holds its value (good examples do). I'm also hoping the 14 service stamps, 13 of which were done a subaru dealership will count in my favour.

I've the glasses guide, and parkers (parkers horrifically undervalued the car) so I know what ball park figure they may go for. Just hoping they dont try and fob me off with a trade price.

A couple of things from my point of view;

- I think you are over valuing your car (we all do it), I would guess you will get a best offer of around £2.5k, before you account for your excess
- I hope you declared the mods

What figure did you give them when you took out the insurance? This will be the absolute max you could hope for.

Again not true.. car values change and the insurance companies know this .. if you modify it for example, contrary to popular belief the insurance companies will take this into consideration if you can provide receipts.

Obviously it depends on the company and if you have declared the modifications.

My advice would be get a book prices from somewhere like parkers, get some Auto trader, piston heads and ebay adverts and hold your ground for the amount you think its worth.

When I set up the insurance with Admiral, 'the estimated value of the car was £4000'. I know they are not going to offer me that, but i'm not going to be happy if they offer 2.5k minus the excess - they are taking the **** if they do that. 2.5k was not the market value of the car before the accident - they will know this. All you have to do is look at the adverts on autotrader / piston heads / ebay. Glassers guide even say its worth more than that.

I'm holding off on signing over the car to them untill I'm satisfied with the amount I can get. After all they can tell me f-off once they have all the registration documents.

Do not accept the first offer and hold out find some examples of similar cars going for that sort of money on a few sites like PH and the scooby forums etc.

Thought I should update seen as though everyone has been nice and helpfull.

Initial offer from Admiral was £2400 minus the excess = £2050
Offer after some explanation by me as to why the car was worth more than that = £2800 minus excess = £2450.

Still not settled on that claim - hoping to bump it up by £200 and get what the cars worth. Will be emailing all the examples I have of cars at a similar value.

QUICK QUESTION: I bought the car from a dealership, and they are using this against me, saying that the advertised prices on autotrader are not the real prices, as they would expect to be knocked down. Is this a valid arguement on their behalf? Surely market value is market value?

Thanks everyone

Market value? Impossible to tell what the cars actually go for, so I would agree that the sticker price is the indicator. Not like you have motor for a part-ex deal?

Sorry to hear about your smash. I tried the same thing last year, only I was only doing 25mph into the roundabout, so it was controllable....just! Diesel is filthy stuff!!

Market value is an average price of vehicle matching yours not what they think sellers will let a car go for! Remember if you're not happy you don't accept you can make a complaint and take it higher!

Thanks, I've just sent them an email and word document, highlighting the fact that there are examples of cars very similar to my own, advertised at a much higher price than they are offering.

Even with dealer prices taken into account (reduce figure by 10%) and excess taken into account - vehicle comes out at above £3000.

I was thinking that it didnt matter what dealer prices were, its down to market value.
