Question 1st gear select

Are there any known problems with UK impreza turbo (1999) gear boxes, selecting first gear when cold? My bro seems to have to force First gear and then eases up on journey.
Wasn't sure if linkage or worse?
cheers

syncro's in the gearbox mate get worn/tired and bulk when the oil is at its thickest/cold.

As above. General wear and tear. Try bleeding the gearbox oil and check for metal bits on the metallic plug. When my old Scoob started making noise in 3rd and 5th I had a mechanic friend do this on his ramps. Loads of little chippings on the plug so started saving for a reconditioned box from API (who for the record ARE one of the best companies to use). David O'Brien is a legend and offers no nonsense or obligation advice!

My whole new recon box was £900 back in 2008 if that helps.
