Question

I have order a MY01 and have been offered a reasonable px on my MY98 (30k miles quickshift etc). I'm sure I could get a better deal by selling the car privately but how do I cover myself when people want to test drive it?

Dont let anyone drive it unless you are insured for any driver, be aware of test drivers who want you to get out of the car, they just might drive off. Best bet is to meet the buyer at a venue other than home and drive the car yourself.Be careful of how thae are going to pay for the car

Send me more details, I am looking to upgrade my 94. What price, spec etc. I am insured on any car!

If you contact you broker and tell them you are selling it they can often provide a couple of week cover for anyone (i paid £10 for this once!)

Although you may pay more at the dealer, peace of mind is what your paying for. You don't have to worry about a load of to$$ers driving your car, theft, bouncing cheques etc.

polarbearit,

Unless you have a traders policy I would check that the driving other cars extension to your policy covers you for Comprehensive Risks...if not...then it could be an expensive repair bill if you had a bump...

Make sure that you get fully comp cover and not just 3rd party.

My insurance covers me 3rd party on any car - but I wouldn't feel comfortable test driving a prospective purchase on just 3rd party.

If the prospectiuve buyer is serious surely they can arrange temporary cover through teir own insurance company? (although they will need to be told the registration for that, which could be a potential security problem).

Personally, after hearing of a couple of people's nightmares, I wouldn't let them drive the car. I could be persuaded to drive *them*, but that's it.

Never, ever, for one second, leave the car unattended with the keys in it.
