UK WRX MY02... How much slower???

There is a long drag that runs up into Crowborough and it used to be possible to pull up in 5th gear and accelerate quite rapidly to quite rapid speeds. MY99
My new MY02 seems positively sluggish and seems to need to be in 4th to achieve a similar performance.
I guess I knew power / grunt wasn't going to be the same but I'm quite suprised / disappointed by the huge difference.
The car only has 235 miles on the clock but even so I'm sure I remember my old one being quicker at the same stage.
That said I have to say I much prefer the new car, refinement, build and now look. I parked next to an old shape at the weekend, and even the most sceptic at work decided the new shape did look better.

Give it a little bit of time - don't push it yet - you haven't done a 1000 miles which means you are still using the thinner 'running in' oil. The cars do start to loosen up with more miles. I found the same thing with my old MY00. This was bought new and needed several thousand miles before it felt 'quick'.
I've seen a very similar thing with my new MY01 - this was bought with 800 miles on the clock and was very tight. Now the car has about 12K miles it is much better. In Spain a couple of weeks ago, it wasn't disgraced against P1s. I'm not suggesting it would beat them in a straight line (it won't) but it didn't do too badly (better than I thought to be honest).
What I have noticed is how other cars have moved on - especially the larger engined turbo diesels - the mid range torque of these cars means that we were passed more than once in Spain by mad locals maxing out their cars

Give her a chance to loosen up mate.
When I had 1500 miles on the clock I found it difficult to pull away from a Golf Gti 16v. Now I would destroy it. The engine really didn't loosen up until 7500+. Now its around 10000 miles it flies. Its much quicker and I'm very pleased.
I think I know the hill you're on about, A26 from T.Wells to Crowborough. I've been up there in 5th accelerating with no problem.

I know it's tight. But I also had a brand new MY99 and that felt noticably quicker at the same stage otherwise I wouldn't be mentioning it.
Love the car though and had a WRSport back box on this time so it sounds loverrrrrly.

All the magazines I have read say that these engines need at least 5000 miles to give their best. I reckon my MY02 pulls more smoothly and responsively from low revs than my previous MY99. That cars acceleration was like a switch - either on or off, no in between. It DID make the car feel faster though, perhaps why your MY99 appeared to pull more strongly.
I think the extra refinement and cornering ability of the MY01/2 make up for any lack of top end grunt anyway. It still makes for a very satisfying drive over a testing road.

I'd agree 100% with you there, Yorkie. I've just been for the 1,000 miler, and the MY02 5 door is loosening up nicely. Certainly much more eager than when I drove it off the ferry a month ago!
And, as you say, the handling balance is such that it still makes an excellent drive on a give & take road. What's more, it's a very refined cruiser as well - much to my surprise and amazement!

I have done 12000 in my MY01 now. Okay I have an ITG Panel Filter but even before that it really started to loosen up after 10k or so.
Every engine will be different or should I say driver. If you red line every gear change from 1000 onwards it will be fully loosened up by say 4000 but if you keep the revs mid range it will take longer say 12000.
In any case for low revs the torque may look good on paper (215 or so) but the band is much narrower than ALL diesels so low end grunt just ain't there. I find the range from 3500 rpm to 5500 rpm is the best unless I am overtaking and need to keep the power down, even then it pulls well into the red line.
