Good Driving Roads ?? Where in the UK
#1
Hiya
Anyone no where they test drive all those cars on those fabulous open roads in the UK that you see on TV and in the mags.
Have got some time off over Easter and want to go on a bit of a drive, reccomendations greatfully received.
Nothing to scary as have to take the wife with me....
Thank you
Greg

West Coast of Scotland, and the Scottish highlands.
No competition really. Hundreds of miles of almost empty roads, stunning scenery, no gatso's.
Other parts of the country have great roads as well, but they tend to be busier, and not have the same variety, and certainly no-where near as much.

I wouldn't say totally gatso (etc) free, my last two trips to scotland both resulted in sp30s, one down the wide A road approaching Stranraer (mobile detector in police car) and one fixed camera got me on the road to Glenfinnan/Mallaig - the very last restricted zone before I got to my hotel after 12 hours of driving!

Probably not where they road test cars but the A31 between Guildford, Surrey and Southampton is a cracking drivers road and there are hardly any cameras on it - well last time I went along it anyway!!! Its a dual carriageway most of the way and theres some cracking bends on it!!!!!

North of Inverness is completely Gatso free, there is just one mobile camera for the whole of the Highlands, though they are supposed to be looking at getting more
There are a few Gatsos on the A9 north of Perth though.
I assume by fixed camera you mean one of those with the 3 strips across the edge of the road?
Greg, if you go for this option and you normally run on SUL, make sure you take Octane booster with you, as NUL is all you get up there. I will probably be in that part of the world for Easter Weekend, so if you see a silver MY00, that appears to know the roads , it may well be me

I know U said UK, but being where U are - I would suggest France.
Just did 8 days over there and the roads are excellent. I did 2k miles - saw about 3 police cars and no cameras.
excellent trip & the Car will get a lot of attention.

Personal favourite ~ A93 From Perth to Braemar through Glenshee.
50 miles in total - 1st half *very* twisty and undulating, opening up to wide, open and sweeping - extremely fast (100 plus easy) with very clear sight lines for the latter half.
As used (and raved about) by Fast Lane / Evo / Performance Car over the years.
Best drive of my life @ approx 7:00am on Christmas Day early 90's along this road. Very little else around....sigh!
Avoid A9 north of Perth as quoted above unless you have a radar detector - drove it last weekend ~ Gatsos-ville (mostly extremely sneakily positioned too).

Scotland is my favourite too, but North Wales & the Pennines have some great roads.
For something more 'local' what about the roads around Wye & Challock - I always go for a blast around there when I'm working in Ashford (Some great pubs too!)

True, true - but watch out for cops hiding in the bushes. I know someone who got nicked on this road and he never even saw them Just got a Fixed Penalty, landed on his door mat

Scoobyjawa,
The M6 from Jct36 to jct 39
is an all time fave of mine
All those tight corners, dips and hollows really test you!
Most roads round The Dales get my vote as being worthy for a banjo

Sorry to put a downer on things, but should we really be talking about all these great roads we love to drive - after all, it only takes a Police officer to look at the BBS and before you know it, he's hiding in a bush down your favourite stretch of road.
I don't wish to put anybodies nose out of joint but this is just my cynical view!
I've got the door wide open and ready to make a very sharp exit....
