Knew it wouldn't take long before the old "get a type-r" comment was made......
Depends what you are looking for from your car and what level you intend to modify to before you can say one car is "best", that's a pretty subjective thing.
I ran a P1 alongside a 22B (basically a Type-R with arches) and both cars had good and bad points, very similar cars but also very different and I wouldn't say either was "better" than the other.
Get along to www.p1woc.co.uk and if it is definately a P1 you are looking for they will give you all the info you need to find a good one

I have a standard P1 with a standard engine, unmapped and unmodified.
Treat them correctly, service and put the correct fuel in and you will be fine.
Check P1 woc there are some special cars for sale at the moment!

Same block and map as a sti or type r, just as much chance as going pop as the next sti not looked after or mapped for uk fuel. Being it was sold as a UK car I think people expected them not to go bang and as they did it has been made into a really big reason not to buy one, I am sure just as many if not more sti and type r have gone pop but it's not made a big deal about as they are a jap import and it is almost acceptable if it happens, crazy as so is the p1 just sold from Subaru uk.
The argument against the p1 is prodrive removed te dccd and the rear 2 po calipers which you get with the type r, that is a big deal to some but not to others.
In my opinion the p1 is still the best looking classic out there 22b excluded and still looks as fresh as it did the day t was released.
Would I have one over a type r, well as I have owned one already and I am now not fussed soo much of having a build number and being a limited edition probably not and would get a well sorted type r for the same money, yes p1 have come right down in price but I think that's just owners panicing and getting rid quickly rather than holding out. A good clean and tastefully modified p1 will still fetch near 10k Mark, were a type r can be had for a lot less and the change spent on making it better.
The thing for the p1 favour is it's suspensin set up, it's regarded as one of the best out of the box so to speak for the uk roads, if you are wanting to buy a car and leave it almost as is the the p1 would et my vote but if you want to change a few bits then get a type r.
Also I think the changed the ratio on 5 th to suit the motorway driving,
As said get over to the p1 owners club, plenty of stuff to read on there

Subaru4You had one for sale when I took mine in for servicing a couple of weeks ago. It certainly looked decent enough to me - and yes, it was up for about £10k.

As a P1 (or a Type R) is going to be 10-11 years old now. You have to ask what components are likely to be worn out and the likely replacement parts and costs. Standard suspension of either model is not cheap. You can get very capable coilovers for less money.
Standard brakes, at least are cheap and the calipers are cheap to refurb. However, lots will have aftermarket big brakes and they copst £££s to replace pads and disks or rotors.
IMO, buy the best car you can for your money. It might be a P1 or a type R, depending on what you find when you're out looking.
