Close call
I have just had a 2.5inch exhaust fitted including a open mouth down pipe (fully decatted)
Picked it up from the garage and it sounded very nice on tick over, not to loud at all. Drove it home which is about one mile. When i was half way home i noticed a small white puff of smoke coming from the bonnet vent. At this point my ar*e fell out thinking my car was on fire. I then got a little bit more smoke, I limped it home as i was a couple of seconds away. I shot the car on the drive way lifting the bonnet as quick as i could.
I was so worried what i was going to see, low and behold NOTHING. Not flame or anything, then i noticed a small puff of smoke comine from the turbo heat shield.
On closer inspection, when the chap at the garage had been putting my car back together he had not paid attention to where the wires/pipes were going, and there was 2 or 3 pipes laid across the heat shield.
There was a slight scorch mark on the pipe, so i am guessing this is what had happened (or hoping). I have moved the pipes but not took the car back out yet to find out. Has this happened to anyone before? I was so worried, i thought it was going to be bye bye scooby.
Before this happened my exhaust popped, is normal in hot weather with no cat??

Yes once my car is up to working temp, it pops and bangs like crazy when on overun. And I'm sure its using more fuel.
I've a sports cat and 2.5 afterburner vortex.
Possible remap if its going to cause damage damage to engine?

Good job you found the pipes, but probably most of the smoke was excess release oil / wd40 used on the bolts when taking off the old exhaust

If you think your engine bay is on fire, don't lift open the bonnet quickly in a oner. If it is on fire, you could make things a whole lot worse, and hurt yourself in the process
