Default Getting a new key cut

My friend has somehow managed to lose the only key for my MY96 RA.

Can I get a new key cut from a lock or do I need to change the locks for another set with key?

Anyone got any experience with this? Ta

Dealer will probably sort you. I've never heard of cutting a key from the lock

BUT: if it's an import, SOME dealers are unhelpful and it may be longer as they have to get details from Japan. Mine, for a UK car, took a week to be made.

The things you need to know are: does the car have the type of key with a chip embedded which "talks" to the ecu? If so, dealer only and around £70 EACH, (yeah, I know, OUCH!).

If it doesn't, you might get away with a new key and lockset from a scrapper.

Good to know as I only have 1 set too... presume this won't affect the cat1 alarm?

I've just recently had to have a new passenger lock as the would-be thief didnt do the job properly and left me with the car and the bill to fix his mess.

I got a new barrel to match my other locks so I wouldn't have to have different keys. Cost me about £40 for the barrel to match the keys, but I could have bought a a full set of barrels for the doors, boot and ignition with keys it was only about £55

Where they get the prices from I dont know. Just replaced my windscreen washer jets............ ........£18+vat each.

Hope some of that helped.

Try buying a temperature sensor for the OE gauge: over £40 plus VAT. Crazy.

Cheers for the advices... As I said it's a my96 RA, so an import - chip??!! It doesn't even have central locking

I guess I'll probably have to use some ingenuity, get inside and remove a barrel and take it from there. My local Subaru dealer (Threeways Abergele - name and shame) are completely uninterested in imports. They say they'll call back, take details and number then never get back to you. Still, might as well try that first.

Wouldn't mind knowing what dealership that is, mine quoted £140 including vat for ONE key, as I only got one with with car!

Dont thin yours has a chip and being an import and a 96, its unlikely a dealer will help>

Effect entry it which is pretty easy, remove the door lock and take to a decent locksmith, they will cut one for it

Right, a little update for y'all...

Express Locksmiths from Rhyl came out. Couple of hours later I have two new keys and the code to get more cut. He removed the barrel I believe and did it on-site (I wasn't there). £80 lighter (should have been £60 but ran into difficulties).

I haven't seen the keys yet so they're probably those fecking massive Datsun ones though pmsl. Next job, find an STI blank.

I also need to get a key cut for my 2001 bug eye. Main branch of Timpsons in town can cut and code it, but it's still £70!!

There must be a cheaper way of getting a new key?
