Default New member seeking advice :)

Hi,

Ive been browsing the forum for a while and decided to join up as Id like to get some advice on a scooby im thinking about buying. I dont really have much knowledge on the scoobies so i hope you guys could give me a bit of guidance on what i should be looking for? The car Ive seen is a 2001 Impreza WRX STi performance, now its got 120k on the clock but as far as i can see shes been very well looked after and has a full service history. What Id like to ask you guys is would you go for one with this kind of mileage on and if so what kind of things should i be looking out for?? Ive often been lead to beleive that scoobies are very reliable hardy cars so would 120k really be a biggie if its been looked after?

Thanks
Faye

it is quite alot of mileage but with full service history, that counts for something.they are hardy cars i have seen some with 150k miles on the original engine.it really depends on how much the car is up for sale?

120k is 120k, things will be starting to get old.
Common faults, knocking rear shocks on the sti,
check turbo for oil leak on boost (exhaust has blue smoke when you boot it)
Look for oil leaks around the rocker cover gaskets. Full service history is a must, with cambelt replacements documented,
The clutch should be replaced by now so check for that.
Car should have good security, with a tracker aswell hopefully.
You really need to find a good mechanic who can look over the car for you, as as tough as these cars are, there are alot of people who mess with them and compramise the cars reliability. Knocking bottom ends have happen simply due to the fact that owners don't keep an eye on the oil level well enough.
There must be someone local to you on here that might do it for a ahem...."drink"

Kind regards,
Matt

not really a good idea to buy a car with that amount of mileage , as it will cost you just as much to run them as buying a newer/less mileage car imho, but if yr on a budget............................................ .................

The car is up for 4.5k and this dealer has made me a generous offer on my current car as part x. It has got lots of service history/reciepts with scooby clinic and the cambelt has been done but I will look into all the other parts that have been mentioned - thanks

Sound advice Matt Thanks for that! It does have a tracker fitted but I think I need to take it for another drive (the dealer drove it today when I went out in it)

Evening fellow Yorkshire person
How many miles a week is this car going to do? If its only weekend fun, then the mileage isnt such an issue however if you is a high mileage girl you may want to avoid this one.

Any link to the car?

Deffo not an sti. Doesn't mention what modifications have been done either, who did them, or if it's been mapped by anyone reputable. Tread carefully mate.

A lot of the work carried out has been done at Scooby Clinic, I wonder if I would be able to get confirmation from them regarding work carried out

its a little steep for the mileage Faye plus as said, its not an STI, its a WRX, you could be better to check out www.pistonheads.co.uk for what your after, and what is your budget? oh and avoid some of the not so nice places to buy your cars from in yorkshire (mainly in the Bradford area, but come back on here with anything you find and we will say ok or not to buy from )

Nick - thanks for that i'll give them a try

Tony - I dont have a budget as such but im trying to keep it cheap as im saving for a house but i still want to have a nice car that has a bit of fire in its belly and puts a smile on my face like my nurburging astra did. Im currently driving a 2002 astra sri turbo and this dealer has made me the best offer so far on it. I do wish id just gone straight for a scoob after the Burg.

Faye, have a look at things like these (its a dealer/trader by the looks) as you can get more car for your money than you think just check service history etc but this is an STI for a good price

Tony is right Faye. Its a buyer's market. You can get alot of car for reasonable money if you're patient.

why not get the blue ,alot less mileage for not much more ,personally i would look on pistonheads as there is more to choose from.
These cars are becoming cheaper as fuel and tax go up
