Default Bonnet catch failures

are these a common occurance on classic imprezas or simply a myth from people who have had bad luck with them?

having purchased an alloy bonnet, i clearly dont want it flying up in my face at any point what so ever so should i be aero-catching it as a precaution?

They're not myths, it can happen but it's largely a matter of poor maintenance rather than bad luck. If you allow it to rust and go sticky then you run the risk.

Provided you keep catch greased and clean there's no reason to think it'll let you down.

I've not heard of one before but that means nothing lol. If the catch is well adjusted and lubricated it shouldn't cause a problem

Not just confined to classics. Had mine fail on my blobeye. Thankfully the safety catch stopped the bonnet coming open. Just cleaned it up, put some grease on it and it's fine again now (fingers crossed).

I would aero-catch just for extra piece of mind. It is worse with the standard scoop as the bonnet does move quite a bit with the standard scoop at speed and can be quite unnerving.

Pete you need to break the 30mph sound barrier to have such issues, you are perfectly safe at 25mph

Aye, because its not specifically mentioned on the service schedule it doesn't mean it should be ignored; Just like any other car, every 12months the bonnet catch (as well as doors, hinges etc) it should oiled; preferably with a squirt of PTFE grease. If its covered in crud, clean it off with degreaser (or neat Traffic film remover), then re-lubricate.

That way it won't rust up, stick or gunge it self up with crud - the prime causes of catch failure.

Simple basic service stuff like this shouldn't even need to be mentioned.
