Get a PPG gearbox with straight cut gears and you will have the whining sound like you get in reverse

They burn out cos of the type of engagement (dog's rather than syncro's), the wine is the gears themselves not the dog's

o as far as the whining noise, if your ever up in notts let me know and i'll take you out in mine lol

i;ve got a ppg straight cut gearset in it, as per mentioned above

depends on the spec, you can vary parts in them, selectors etc etc, but alot of higher spec track/race cars use them. ppg is just a brand by the way

once you hit 350bhp your at the limit of a normal 5 speed, theres an on going discussion about how strong a 6 speed box is comapred to a 5 speed ppg, but seems to be the race cars prefer the ppg set. at about 550ish you'll start breaking ppg's, its not to do with the power they can take as such, its top do with how the power is loaded on them.

if you build the power up they will take a hell of alot (1000bhp+) but if you shock load them they can die at as low as 500. its why drag cars break driveshafts, gearbox's, diffs etc

It varies and depends more on driving style but 450bhp with straight cut gears will be fine

well what spec would you suggest? i would go for the 5 speed over the 6 speed aswell as it's lighter but the 6 speed would appeal for the motorway miles if i needed to do any. what do you mean by shockload aswell?

shockload, basicly if you launch the car off the line you suddenly put the force on the box, diffs, shafts etc, thast shock load, it the box killer.

how much power are you running? or plannign to run?

o also i have a uk 5th gear in mine, so it sits nice and quiet on the motorway, wlel the gearbox does anyway lol

ah right, that's what i thought you meant but just wanted to be sure...

i don't really have a limit on what i'm planning to run yet, i have a standard v2 sti 555 but i'm going for the following....

2.1 stroker
ppg gear box straight cut gears
fmic
uprated fuel pump
700cc injectors
exedy hyper carbon r triple plate clutch kit
syvecs ecu with antilag n launch control
ap racing 6 pot brakes

i haven't decided on the turbo yet but i think i'll be going for scoobyclinics 54 turbo... something that will make 500bhp easily anyway

i'm gonna be a very busy chap saving up for that methinks but should make a good project page anyway

think he found them too short and not idealy suited for uk roads, aka couldn;t get a nice rev for different set speeds, 30, 40 etc etc and when giving it large was changing gear every five seconds
