The only open deck 2.5 block i have seen have 902 on them.

B25c 701 702 are EJ257 semi closed deck blocks as fitted to the later turbo 2.5 impreza WRX & STI's including the Hatch.

Sorry about my post about Legacy Blocks ...........have a look at this site ..

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums//sho...d.php?t=851463

Maybe the previous owner sourced a USDM 2.5 STi block from the 2004-2006 US market LOL

I'd phone Ian Litchfield and ask about which block he uses / used for the type 25 and for later mods to the 2.5 Hawkeye and 2.5hatch

Now worries mate,i must admit you did have me worried, have you got Ian litchfields number that i could give him a ring to confirm this bizarre engine thread but finally getting down to the confusion of this classic impreza i have bought ,thought i'de dropped a clanger ,been kicking myself for not checking the block i checked the v5 and engine number, but didnt cross reference the coding on the block itself, lets hope it all works out fine, thanks for you interest in this thread been bewildered ever since finding it.

I'd also ask some of the "old timers" who have been dropping 2.5 litre blocks into classics and new ages over the last few years........David at API and Alan Jeffrey ring a bell but there are quite a few more
