Default Losing water everytime i drive

Hi,

Hope everyone is cool ?

I'm having an issue here - I keep filling up the water tank and then after about 300 miles it overheats again.... and the tank is dry.

What things should I be looking for that could be causing the problem ?

Thanks in advance!

check the top and botttom hose... mine was doing it since xmas and i found the top hose to be leaking when it was hot and under pressure... but it was allways dry in the engine bay so it was a night mare to find

Could range from something simple, to something really bad. Mines was doing this and it turned out to be the head gasket, but I ruled out all the easy/cheap stuff first.

Check all hoses for leaks, could be a leak that is only apparent when on boost.

I checked all my hoses- ok
Replaced radiator cap with new one
Noticed a sleak crack on one of the header tank pipes, replaced - still no difference

I then bought a brand new radiator, still no difference

Bit the bullet, removed engine and stripped, turned out it was blown headgasket on one side

hi there,

dont know if this helps but i had the same problem and it turned out to be the radiator, it only leaked when the rad was hot and under high pressure but when it was cold or just sat on the drive ticking over the rad never leaked,

it took me ages to find the problem and i only found it because i did a pressure test on the cooling system and had a very small drop in pressure after 10 minutes, so i took it out then when i got back give it some high revs and there it was a very small split in the rad but it was enough to make me lose all the water in the expansion tank every 2-3 weeks, i fit a new rad and everything has been good since.

just a thought if u pressure test the cooling system with the car up to running temp this should also find back pressure from the head gasket even a very small pressure increase, also get your cap pressure tested or buy a new one because if you are suffering from head trouble you may get more problems and if the pressure goes the other way then your oil will be full of water and there will be that creamy residue on your dip stick/oil filler cap.

hope this helps steve.

Possibly a hose leak to start with, but letting it overheat quite a few times might have resulted in warped heads.

Barndogg, the comments of the others are correct, but I'll ask you a further question.

When you first found the cooling system empty, and again on other occasions, did you refill with a proper water/coolant mix, or just water out of the tap?

Get a sniffer test done - will check for exhaust gasses in the coolant; the most likely symptom with Subaru HGF.

You could also remove the return hose from the plastic reservoir, refit a longer hose and route it out of the car towards the screen - if upon full boost you get water coming out its likely HGF

Also with this type of leak you need to be monitoring it daily - letting it get hot will create irrecoverable damage
