Red face Whats that ticking sound??

Probably heard this alot already but my 1997 2.0 WRC STI jap import has developed a loud ticking sound. It seems to be coming from the drivers side (right) of the engine somewhere around the pistons. Ive been told it could be a piston return valve sticking or dodgy spark plug or leads meaning the piston is slapping. The car also runs for about 10 mins then seems to flood and stop. Ive been told to try draining oil to remove any blocks on the valve and change spark plugs or leads. Any other ideas what it could be. Is this a common problem???? Thanks Adam

I recently got a simlar noise after going down to 5/40 oil...it's the tappets I believe. if the car was running fine would the noise be a big problem? how loud is it? can it be heard from in the car?

The noise on mine is not really something you can ignore. To be honest ive stopped driving it because im worried about any damage caused. There is a definite power loss. Thinking maybe its only running 3 pistons??
