Default Undoing crank pulley bolt

Hi all im currently doing the cambelt on my 95 wrx and struggling with the crank pulley bolt. Is there a way of holding the pulley without a specialist tool also is it left hand or right hand thread. Thanks.

Get someone to get in the car, put it in gear and foot on the brake. Then a big breaker bar and jobs done. Anticlock to undo!

Normal right hand thread - i normally lock/jam the flywheel (through the rubber bung behind the turbo) with a 10mm Allen Key.

long socket bar on the bolt, jam up against the chassis behind the passenger headlamp and flick the engine quickly with the key and it will crack off no problem, works a treat everytime

if you do the aboth, make sure you take the crank senser connection off. or may fire up, and could damage the whole engine

I would be on the fifth-gear-and-brake team.

Using the starter, can work..but as dabow warns...could go horribly wrong.

Its getting it tourqed up to the right setting when you put them back on thats the problem....................Guess you dont want them flying off

Plus the crank pully is at the bottom, which is tight to get tools in there because of the rad

Just done my 3 piece pully kit that CDF were selling in the group buy, pain in the ***..................

Well was a job that that was. Ended up jamming a bar and giving it a quick flick on the key, job sorted. I have found that my water pump is the one making te funny noises any advice on removal and fitting if this.

now the timing cover is off, refit the crank bolt and turn the engine over until the timing mark on the crank gear is bolt upright at the top theres a little mark on the housing where the crank angle sensor fits through, then check your cam pulleys line up with the cut outs in the rear of the guard, then lift up the tensioner to release the pressure on the belt you probs need a long pin to lock the tensioner so it doesnt spring back down. Then its up to you but i usually unbolt an belt idler to give the belt a bit more slack to move it off the other pulleys.

then just unbolt your water pump assuming youve drained the coolant allready, then bolt in your new pump and reassemble.

I also found this an absolute nightmare of a job!

I am considering changing to the CDF lightweight pulleys, but the last time put me off a bit lol!

Impact wrench never fails, you can get a tool called a basher which is a big bar you hit with a hammer which is v effective too.
