Hi

I assume you have a classic?

From what iv read they are pretty much the same, ie all classic boxes are pretty pants when after more than 365bhp though torque is what kills them.

Theres been many debates on this have a search, depends on mechanical sympathy also. But cars have blown at 300bhp and some have gone over 400!!!

The Type r boxes will, from what iv read, strip 5th gear more often than not. Obviously the best thing to do is get a newage 6 speed in but its mega money.

yes mate i have a version 5 type r and have got it booked in for a remap soon should take it to about 330bhp/330lbft but later on in the year or early next year i was thinking about pushing it towards the 400bhp mark
just dont want to fork out for a 6 speed

It wont take 400bhp, neither will your engine so I would personally bin the car if your after that sort of power and buy a new age STI as you can get a nice JDM twin scroll car for the cost of a full rebuild/gearbox/brake upgrade etc which will set you back about 9-10k.

In a similar position myself.

330/330 will be ok, but as i said they have gone at less than that. But majority is when a bigger turbo is put on to get to that 400 mark. Some have lasted up to 400 though and been abused !.

Imo its when you accelerate full bore from off boost, then as the turbo kicks in BOOM goes the gear. I was advised to drop a gear and accelerate. ie going to over take a lorry, your in 4th low rpm and instead of just putting your foot down in 4th and relying on the turbo, drop into 2nd/3rd and overtake.

Not that i drive like that, but that is an example of a way of putting alot of stress on the gearbox. Leaving the ground off a hump back bridge ect will do
also.

The 6speeds are very good though, if you plan on going up near the 400 mark you should try and budget one in then youll never have to worry again.

What Tony said is a valid point to take into consideration also, unless you are prepaired to spend that on the type-r? I know id rather have a sorted Type R over a newage, but you may have a different opinion.

Its not good is it. I was just going on advise from a respected tuner, not saying its gospel "like your box wont break if" but more as an example of mechanical sympathy. Sure theres some more tips around for it, though dont think they will ultimately help much.

i think i will get a 6 speed box eventually as i plan on keeping the car for a long time i could have bought a new 6 speed sti instead of the type r but to me the 2 door impreza is the ultamate impreza (couldnt afford a 22b) not that theres anything wrong with the newer ones
