Mines been off the car for nearly 3 years now and no signs of damage.
Wouldnt imagine it gets hot enough under there.
Wear gloves when you pull it off (the sound deadening material that is) it was filthy.

Took mine off about a year ago, for the same reason as you have said, It was looking horrid.
As I like a clean under bonnet look it had to come off, looks better for for too.

I have a white Bug Sti and still have mine on, all the paint around it discolors. usually when I polish all the white up around the mat it tend to last for a month before it needs doing again.
I also found when I did run with out it my paint on the top of the bonnet dulled and turned a grey/brown colour, you can see how bad it is untill you use a paint renavator.
