From what I've seen, every **** up in the world is perpetrated when "cleaning" "re-useable" air filters, from carelessly using petrol, to utilising some other cleansing product which isn't intended for the purpose, (Mr Muscle) to wildly over oiling them, to causing breaches of health and safety guidelines by the criminal use of high pressure air lines.
I'd just fit one, and when I think it's dirty, I'd fit another one.
Interesting question and I'm glad you asked it.

I have used this type of panel filter for years. TSL green filter x2, K&N filter x1, and i NEVER bloody clean em. FFS, you spend thousands in your cars, then moan about replacing an air filter FFS! Buy a new one! LOLOLOLOLOLOL.
Why throw them away there ment to be reused. I have a K&N and I clean and lightly oil it at every service. Never had a problem with maf.
Had an STi panel filter, now got a Green Cotton panel filter.
Both similar I think, test results in mags and online seem to think the Green is better than the STi.
Although I've also read that the standard Subaru one isn't bad!
