should i take a gamble?
Found a uk 2000 turbo for sale. It's done 161 thou miles... totally standard car.Everything works, mot'd, and taxed, no rust, bodywork looks ok could do with a spit and polish etc, its only up for a grand. is it worth taking a risk on? i have around another grand to sort any probs out if the need arises, .... advise appreciated.. cheers (not looking for a modded scoob, i simply want a standard car.)

If you dont think you will have the cash to change the engine over in say 6 months when it goes bang then dont bother. Any little bleep in the system could cause it to die but saying that it could happen even if the car had only done 10k but any mods will make its death more immanent.

How long has the current owner had the car?
If it's a daily driver that has had the same owner for a number of years, chances are it has been well looked after. Ask what has needed to be changed recently - tyres, brakes? When was cam belt last changed? Has it had a replacement clutch?
My WRX has 200,000 miles, and to be honest, not a lot has needed changing in the last 150,000 miles that I've had it, except for the regular 'consumables'. It's had one new clutch about 60,000 miles ago, regular cam belts, etc. Just had to change the steering rack because of a leak.
Better to buy a decent long-term daily driver than one which has gone through a number of owners, each not really bothered about whether it will last 6 months. There are so many classics being broken now, that parts (if required) can be obtained relatively cheeply.
You have a higher risk of parts wearing-out with a high mileage car, but that's usually reflected in the price!

Well it looks honest mate but like i said before, if you buy it and in 6 months it does die (not saying it will but if it does) can you afford to fix it? Its all well and good having a car with a lot of miles on but you do NEED a full service history to make sure it has had the oil/plugs/filters and belts changed when needed. OIL being the main one because you cant take peoples word on it

1998 with 8 owners - not too good .... at that high mileage you would be looking for 1 or 2 owners, to be honest.
Also, when you said 2000 in your OP I thought it was a MY00 ... the MY99 and MY00 are considered the best of the Classics.
ABS light on - MOT Fail
Horn doesn't work - MOT Fail
MOT due in April 2010 - maybe just 9 weeks away?
£1000 is the starting bid .... it could well go for more?
It could be a bargain - or it could be a money pit ..... why hasn't the Horn and ABS been fixed? I would be suspicious, as the rest looks good .... careful as you go.
