Default Please help as no joy in the brake section

People need some help i have AP 4pots, 304mm disks (i think), with Ferodo DS2500 on at the minute but the disk need replacing.

i have been looking around and there are soo many makes of disk such as AP, EBC, BLACK DIAMOND, PERFORMANCE FRICTION and so on and so on.

priced from £180-£600

now what i do want to know is not what is the best palce to buy them, nor what some folk will recommend as they make the most profit on them. I am looking for real useage here, which you have personaly found to be in your opinion the best disk and setup.

what i do want to know is what are BEST disk suited for the classic impreza?

and even

what DISK and PAD combo is best for the classic impreza?

i need them for road use and on the track,

now please let me know

Speak to Ian Godney @ Godspeed brakes - I have a similar setup on my classic & he makes the discs & sells the pads at a very reasonable rate.

Genuine AP discs would be the only ones worth considering IMHO.

AP 6 Pots fitted to mine with genuine AP Discs for a reason

Have a chat with AP before doing anything http://www.apracing.com/info/contact.asp

DJ i have spoke with ian and yes he can sort me out some of his disks, which is fine and they were at a good price in all fairness to him.

what i am trying to find out is what is the best and what people recommend as the best setup in thier opinion for the classic. I was hoping for peoples views on what they have tried and tested not soo much what they make the most profit on or who's mates comapany will benifit from the sale etc if that makes sense. (not saying thats what you have done by the way) i am trying to find out the best setup and rather than buying a set and finding them poor / over priced for little result and wasting time and money i am looking for tried and tested setups from people who have actualy used them

thanks for your help thats a +1 for the godspeed set up

cheers bob i will do, thing is i had the AP 4 pots out at bedford on saturday and they just felt poor, un responsive and did not want to stop from high speeds. i assume this will be due to the fact the disks are naff and need replacing. as if not i will have to get a set of the 6 pots as i had them on my p1 and i could not fault them.

cheers +1 for genuine AP's

Well, I had the STI brembo's (std discs) before the AP's with Godspeed discs & DS2500's - the AP setup was streets ahead.

I don't think you will be dissapointed with Ian's gear - I get nothing for recomending his stuff, other than the satisfaction of helping a fellow owner.

Steve
The brakes won't feel that great you have now , and thats purely down to the size of them , going to a larger disc will make a world of difference , at the end of the day , your discs are only slightly larger than the standard Subaru four pot brakes , although the pads are also larger , you will have an increase in performance , but not a night and day difference , I would only fit the 304mm kit if you were running 16" wheels , on 17's you need to go to 330mm.
With a larger disc , you will get more leaverage from the caliper , I explain this with undoing a bolt with a small ratchet , then use a power bar , the extra leaverage with the power bar make it easier to undo , its the same principle with larger discs.

I can supply you the 304mm AP discs , as well as my own 304mm discs , I would recomend the 330mm discs to fit your AP 304mm bells.

Cheers Ian

thanks ian, i assume the 330mm disk is your own supply disk and not AP as i was aware that you can not put the larger disk in due to the bells are for the smaller 304mm.

also i have a set of ds2500's in at the minute they have not been on there too long coukd i keep useing these or would i need to get them replaced at the same time.

HI
Yes the disc is our own make , we make them specially to fit the 304mm bells as the bolt patterns are different between the 2 sizes
If you pads are fairly new , then yes you can reuse them , but you will have to flat the face of them up on emery cloth / sand paper to make sure they are flat as they will have worn to the shape of your old discs.
Do this with the sand paper on a flat surface , and rub the pad back and forth , should take long to do , and by looking at them , you will see when they are flat again

Cheers Ian

HI
I can supply you the 330mm grooved discs , and spacers to fit between the calipers and brackets to allow for the larger discs , for £295 a pair , 24 nuts and bolts are £15 , P&P is £12

I had Godspeed 2 piece discs on my old WR1 with DS2500 pads and they were brilliant. I only wish Ian made discs to fit the 356mm AP 6 pots on my current STI .

back on topic i have been looking and i can find the 304mm AP's for £420-£520 depending on if i need 28mm or 32mm thickness not sure how i can tell though?

which is an lot of money considering that is

A) a small disk
B) i would like to upgrade to a AP 6pot kit at a later date
C) well just FIVE HUNDERED quid for a set of disks , now i am shocked at how much these go for so looked and a set of Performance Friction disks and they are the same cost.

so are you paying for a brand name or are they actually that good and worth the money compared to a set of something like BLACK DIAMOND or EBC which are arounf £180 a set.

advice and opinins please

steve

Steve, i dont think you have realised that you can NOT use the black diamond ebc etc on your application while running the ap calipers. You need 304mm discs where the ebc etc will be 294mm so will NOT work. You could sell the ap calipers, get subaru 4 pot ones and get the smaller discs, but you will lose performance.
The most COST EFFECTIVE and in my opinion the best value solution is what Ian at godseed has recommended. You get to replace your discs for much less than £500 and you get to go larger. Ian has a background in rallying, his discs come with a 1 year warranty which INCLUDES track use. Plenty of people use his discs and i have not heard of any problems with them. I am not connected in any way to any trader on here.
AP discs are excellent, i run a 362mm 6 pot kit on my car and cant fault them. The kit was £1600.

thanks mate, yeah i have realised the ebc kits etc are for standard setup

i appreciate your advice. i am looking ot replace the 4pot setup later in the year (towards the end) so i think you are right ian's kit is looking my best option being its cost efective and i get the use of bigger disks.

thanks for eveyones help

If its any help at all, I ordered a pair of discs for my Brembo's from Godspeed yesterday. Did my homework first and with Ian's reputation for producing great quality products it was a no brainer for me

PF EBC Black Diamond don't do 304 x 28mm rotors for your AP bells IIRC. AP rotors are expensive but Ian or Comp Brake do replacements for a lot less.

If you use carbon mettallic pads they will be a massive improvement on DS2500's IMO but the downside is high wear and dust.

Lose weight on your car - it's free and will improve the brake performance

cheers floyd so that is why i could not find the size disk i was looking for as they dont do it ha you learn something new everyday and i wish you would of come along earlier as it would of saved plenty of time lo.

it is my everyday car mate so dont really wnat to loose the aircon, pasenger seat and door cards as they hold the speakers. if i ever buy a run around and decide to pull this off the orad then it will all be stripped and caged but for now i really need to keep it as is.
