Question regarding Japanese WRX's and octane content
#1
Hi, I'm from Barbados, and I'm interested in purchasing an MY99 WRX Japan spec later this year.
The thing is that the gas we get here is rated at roughly 92 octane. Now, I've read some horror stories about 95 octane gas, so I figure that 92 octane would be even worse.
My question is if using octane boost would raise the octane content of the gas sufficiently, and failing that, if the ECU can be remapped for our crappy gas.
Thanks and regards,
Handbrake2.

Hi, I have a feeling that USA octane ratings are not directly comparable to European ratings as it may be a figure derived from both RON and MON (Motor Octane Number) which is a different rating. I am not certain about this and maybe talking tosh but worth checking locally with an oil supplier or someone who knows their stuff. It may not be as bad as you think!! DL

Hi,
I live in The Bahamas and just bought a MY2001 STI JPN spec. 92 octane = roughly 96 - 97 RON (RON is what they go by in Japan). I will be running my STI on 93 octane = about 97 - 98 RON. You should be fine on the 92 octane. I have discussed this whole issue with gas companies, scooby owners etc... my conclusion is to get a knock sensor and run your JPN spec on the 92 octane. If it knocks add some octane booster and you should be fine. Most say the ECU will just retard timming and you can run 96 or greater RON (roughly 92 octane) ok in the JPN spec WRX's and will just have a small power loss.
I also know a company that got me a MY2001 WRX STI with 460 kms on the clock for a great price. If you want I can put you in touch with them. They sell to Barbados.
Hope this helps. I am not a guru though ;-)
Cheers,
Ray
