Default using a fair bit of oil

I have a 95 wrx with sti bottom end conversion, it seems to drink a fair bit of oil, I recently got it re-mapped and thought that might cure the oil situation but it has'nt...... any suggestions guys?

my 02 wrx std 2 litre bottom end used about 1 litre every 1k miles from new until it was replaced 40 k miles later running around 400 bhp, when it was removed all looked fine

My new 2.5 (forged) is using 1 litre ever 800 miles and has done from new and all seems fine ( fingers crossed )

If things changed over night i would be a little worried, how much are you getting through ?

yeh smokes on start and a little on boost, but turbo is fine. I was told that the forged pistones are a bit gappy so are letting a little oil through, but i'm new to all this car tinkering stuff so am a bit clueless.....

how many miles are you doing in the 4 to 6 week period.also just because you have an sti bottom end it dont mean it shud be using a lot of oil.

Many 2.5s do use a fair bit of oil.
Is it a 2.5 bottom end?

Some 2.5s do and some dont use oil. About a liter a 1000 miles seems to be average.
My understanding is on non forged engines the rings can let oil past. Remember the pistons lie flat in this engine and oil drops to the bottom of the bore when non running and seeps past the piston.
Forged engines - can be a touch loser so that is another reason why oil can also get past the rings.
The soultion is to fit a fairly heavy duty oil catch can...one that returns to the sump
Cheers
Steve

It doesnt stop the oil edging past the pistons, but it does mean that alot of the oil it isnt burnt off as it were, or pisses out the dump valve, or sits in the intercooler pipes - much of it returns to the sump back to where it is supposed to be.

So it does stop useage - Yes

I've always wondered why my car uses loads of oil..
Looks like an oil catch can is next on my list of things to do.
Cheers for the info Steve

Looking at your spec an oil cooler would also be good - as oil temps with a 2.5 bottom end can also edge higher
all the best

It is the advice David at APi gave me. I have only run the engine so far at very low boost - but have seen a small drop in oil temps already. Previously with out the cooler - the temps became a problem. Obviously each car is different. But a cooler is strongly recommended.

APi also supply return to sump catch cans too

Any idea how much your oil cooler was and how much the oil catch cans are?

My mate who fitted it struggled a bit a first to work out the best way to fit it. We got there in the end. I might have some pics and details on my other computer if so I will get them over to you
Cheers
