What makes us feel the need for speed?

I guess most of you are in the same situation as me. You love fast cars, really enjoy driving, own an Impreza and wouldn't settle for much less. What makes us different from the majority of other people who are happy with 'average' cars and don't desire something quick like a Scoob, or just won't pay for it even though you know lots of them could? I still can't put my finger quite on it. Computer racing games when we were young? Motorsport? One upmanship? The pose value?
I'll put my need partly down to all those things and also an early driving experience about 10 years ago when I was out accelerated by a 1.1 Fiesta who's owner didn't even realise I desperately trying to keep up, ragging the bo***cks of my mums 957 Fiesta. From then on I really wanted a fast car...
I also had a mate (still a mate!) who had a Cavalier SRI when I was driving said Fiesta. This made me quite envious as it was like a Ferrari F40 compared to the Fiesta - really! This also made me long for something fast. Now I've got a 98 WRX and he's only just sold the Cav and bought... wait for it... a 2.0 Laguna. How things change.

I did not buy my scooby cos it was the fast car in the world, I got it for the looks, the speed is a bonus, I'm in to drag racing big style so a scooby is not the best car for that, thats how I get my thrils now, before you ask no I'm not an old git who does not drive fast when I can.
Why do I like fast cars, I blame my grandad, when he was alive & I was young he used to drive fast & I loved it, the I got a push bike & had my own way of going fast & thing just got biger, faster & more expensive from there.
I also blame films with car chases in them, Stee Mcqueen in Bullit for example, personaly I think The Fast & Furious was a crap film.

I think I own a fast car to compensate for my lack of sexual drive, as other road users or pedestrians often point out to me with finger signs and screaming insults. Or is twice a day good enough?

Love the topic...
I love my STi2 so much and having spent thousands on it you really do appreciate every aspect of the car..
I can only blame, rather thank my Dad who was really into his racing, watching him blast round goodwood in the 60s in his aston martin lagonda. But i suppose it all started when i was a passenger in my mummys tummy while they were @ the 1961 monaco grand prix stood on casino bend, although i didnt get to see any of the race i certainly herd the sound of those engines roaring past..
This was to be my intro to the thrills and spills of motorhood..
Thanks Mum and Dad!!
