I am a virgin!
Hello guys, another newbie here..
I am currently searching for my first scooby, finally time to leave the diesels alone for a while.
I originally wanted a classic however think i've now decided on a bug-eye. If anyone has any buying advice, what to look for/avoid etc, that would be great.
Cheers...

test drive both see what you think i went from a 3 yr old bug to a 12 yr old classic back in 2005 and was suprised at how similar they felt in terms of drive and ride quality. you would never have thought there was such an age gap. Both classic an bugs a pretty cheap now although the classics are starting to get old now up to 17 years old for the early ones. My personal choice if i was buying now would be a late classic x or y reg. Its a minefield at min as there is a lot of dogs about. I know from personal experience.

I'd go bugeye and like matey said, make sure the drive is nice etc..selling mine after xmas once its been remaped and exhaust is back on. 2002 bugeye 52 plate with 48000, scooby blue of course, look at recent thread posted by me and you will see pics. £6500 and been looked after since i have had it, spent loads on it.

thanks guys, i'm willing to travel to get the right one so we'll see what comes up. Vicky your car looks lovely... Could well be an option if i haven't sorted anything by after xmas..
I took a bug-eye out for a test drive on the weekend, it didn't feel right, felt quite 'flat', almost like it was far too smooth. Is this how they are? I mean it almost felt like it was lacking a turbo!! and the brakes were certainly not what I expected.. pretty poor. I think i need to take another one out to compare.

STI's have better brakes (330mm brembo 4 pots) the wrx's have subaru 294mm and are crappy to say the least, the car has a small turbo (compared to the STI) so is quite smooth on power delivery, drive a few though and what sort of budget do you have? you should be able to pick up a nice lowish mileage model or even a blob eye for the right money (try to get full service history, its recommended )

unfortunatly brakes are an imprezas weak point. Which spec did you take out? the uk wrx is 215 bhp.. I have heard people say they feel a little tame in comparison to the classic. I had an imported one they are around 245 bhp standard.it was rapid but felt to have quiet a bit of turbo lag. it felt no quicker than my mates 1998 classic wagon either but it still did the job for me

You can find decent cars on pistonheads, lots to choose from, here is an example of what you should be looking for
Subaru : Subaru Impreza WRX 2.0 turbo
Or if you want an STI....
Subaru : Subaru WRX STI UK Type ProDrive 2002

i took out a uk spec wrx so 215bhp version, expected a lot more but like i say, i think i need to try another to compare..
Thanks Tony, i missed both those cars on pistonheads I wasn't even sure there was a type UK sti - lots to learn. You're about right there with my budget though, looking at around 5k however could prob stretch a little further for the right car... What bhp are the uk sti's just out of interest?
