Default Mitsi FQ400

ok guy at work has one, and eventually he took me out in it.

Totally decatted boost thingy in-side and very noisy.

So we set off warmed her up then he booted it.

well u know what, to say its 400 BHP and 60k and does 140 to the tank, it had torque but nothing i gasped at, to be honest my WRX-S with 99ron in felt nearly same, and im being honest, Obvoiously it isnt,

Only car where ive gasped was a carrera 2 now that was torque.

I suppose i expected too much.

For day to day use and power torque and not too bad fuel my baby does me.

Drove down to London on sunday got MPG to 31.7 did 224 on just about 2/3 tank. not too shabby.

anyway just thought id share my experience, not many time u get to screw an FQ400 think his was number 55 or so the plaque said near gear ****.

i remeber reading that the FQ340 pulled off and felt the same as an STI PPP at 305bhp... its all about the torque, ..without it your going no where

A mate of mine has a JDM 340/340 STI. After a blast in his mates 400 brake Evo 9 he was amased at the power it delivered, not to mention the grip.
Worlds apart from his newage STI apparently.

My mates Evo 8 was the exact opposite, didnt feel much quicker than my decatted UK 98 at the time.

Felt lacking in torque and grip, I could almost drift it, Lol.

Much prefer everything about the Impreza, I wont be going back to an Evo again I dont think.

Just my 2p though

I Have a mate that sold his scoob for a fq400 and regretted it a week later.

Think his exact words were "it doesnt out a smile on my face like the scooby did"

I thought it was a sexy looking car from front rest off it was pig ugly. just my opinun,

And bearing in mind my mate only had a bugeye WRX with only a few subtle mods and hed rather have that back!

I dont realy know whey everyone expects so much from the evo compared to the impreza. Down at jap show at pod i went up against 3 evos in my type r and won every time. I was talking to a chap the other day about my car and he said, my daughter has a subaru and is selling to buy an evo, then he looked at me as if to say are you jelous with a silly grin on his face. No im not. Yes the evo is a great car but imo its no better than the subaru, and after driveing a few evos i wouldnt get rid of my type r for one.

My mate has a FQ400 and unless you screw the guts out of it they are not that quick. The turbo is too big and has huge amounts of Lag on it. IIRC a Fiat estate out dragged one on Top gear Both at 50mph in 5th gear.

I don't think your mate knows how to drive it properly if you couldnt tell the difference.

Did they not change the FQ400 from a twin scroll to a single scroll? the twin scroll cars will feel and respond better in gear (in higher gears) than that huge single scroll turbo.

LOl he does , but in a straightline, there isnt much driving to be done bar flooring it,

Im not intrested in corners, just sheers vroominess.

hes also got a 310 bhp scooby hawkeye, of which he uses when he needs to do miles.

I just wasnt as impressed as i thought i would be, taking into mind its nearly 60ks worth of car,

Its 1 big turbo im sure Top gear said 14psi Garrett or something.

compared to a classic the weight of the fq will feel like its killing the power, or torque.
Compared to a lardy newage, maybe not.
regardless, unless your buddy was short shifting at 4k rpms then I would suggest that its a poorly 400 and he needs it looking at.

Having owned 3 Evos and 3 scoobys in the past, I have to admit that the Evo doesnt feel as quick as it should, The power delivery is a lot smoother to the scooby so the scooby always felt quicker, reality is that there usually nothing much in it!!!!

spot on.

There will always be umpteen threads though about two cars that are both 4wd turbo motors with similar performance.

Which is quicker 300bhp scoob or 300bhp evo

Isn't the new Evo heavier now ? 1500+ kgs ? Wouldn't that blunt the perception of torque ?

Actually, it's also about the right weight to tow a caravan :-)

The GT version does look amazing though

FQ400 must be fast no matter what some posters above say

When i had my old v5 Type R with mild mods, made 340 bhp, i had a play with my mate who had Evo 8 260bhp but had some big mods, 9 turbo ect and made 400 bhp. We tried every thing from standing starts to rolling starts and i was with him every step of the way, prob he had a *** packet lead. Without a doubt he would leave me top end with gearing issue. I found that the standing start was crazy, like the evo had no boost in comparison to my R, as if the evo depends and relies on the revs. Suppose just charactaristics of the cars engines, turbos ect. For sure i think, the Imprezas are more of a hoot to drive, with a bigger grin factor and £ for £ much cheaper to mod in comparison to evos or any car if it comes to bhp matching Just my opinion anyway.

The new scooby isnt exactly light!!! Most new cars are heavy now, just look at the new Focus RS compared to the Mk1 Focus RS, and even little hot hatches such as the lightweight Clio 172 compared to its replacement the Clio 197.

I think most new cars now are ruined with dreaded weight now, O.k they might have a few extra ponnies under the hood, but the extra weight means that there not as quick as the cars there replacing!!!!

Bring back old school motors, like the Renault 5 GTT under 1000kgs and the potential to tune them to 200bhp.

^^ Cars will have to get lighter in the future otherwise manufacturers won't hit the Govts draconian average CO2 levels ...
