what classic would you buy for £4000???
looking to get my third scooby, first was a 99 uk turbo modded to 270bhp, which i loved ,then had version 3 sti imported from japan which was great as well apart from needing a new clutch as soon as i got it imported and the amount of money i lost on it when i sold it. anyway looking for another one after 2 years away, been looking at the usual websites and i have seen a nice sonic blue 99 uk turbo with ppp fitted for 4k, done 68k, or i could go for a one owner mica blue uk turbo 70k with leather totally standard and fssh, or go down the v3 or v4 sti route again and take my chances with regards to history etc. what would you guys go for? car used for short commute and weekend blasts, no trackwork etc. discuss..............

Depends if its not going to be used for long journeys. If not then an RA is probably the best to go for. If you want the car to go on journeys, trips etc then RA gearing (IMHO) is too short and was a big reason for me selling my RA. It was just a ball ache driving anywhere for more than an hour or so.
Not sure if the gearing is different between a 99 STI and a 99 UK turbo - I assume it is??
I would prolly go for the sonic blue UK car - do you have a link?

yes, its an eu import was in ireland now in england, hence rare sonic blue colour. i really like the type ra's, like the high spec of the sti's and the roof vent etc, gearing isnt an issue as i dont do any long distances, work is only couple of miles away. want sonic blue preferably but quite rare to see v3 or v4 ra's up for sale that are really nice ones, and most are white. and the ones that are for sale are up for silly money.

An STI Type RA i dont know why people dont like the RA on long trips, i drove mine 524miles in oneday only stopping for fuel and it was great on the motorways you dont even need to gear down to shoot off for over taking etc

Only 74F UK cars were the P1 and Terzo.
Any 74F MY99/00 car that looks like a UK car is in fact an EU import and not actually for the UK market.
In hindsight, although I did find the short gearing of the RA a pain I sold my RA far too quickly so never really gave myself enough time to get used to it - I only drove it 1000 miles then sold it.

A late classic STI you may find for 4k, either standard or with just a few simple mods i.e exhaust.. You will not find a late MY97-00 type-r or RA for anything like 4k
if an import has been in the country for a good few years and has been well maintained and serviced i don't see the worry about long term history

I wouldnt bother narrowing your search down to a specific model,
I would be more interested in getting the best car you can for the money, whether it will be best condition or best modded or lowest mileage or newest, but for me it would have to be a mixture of all,
but imho you cant go wrong with a mint my00 uk turbo with ppp fssh and low miles with some nice wheels/brakes

For £4k, I'd get me a nice STi RA (or slightly later WRX RA). More power than the UK cars and the close ratio gearing would be sooo much fun against mr BMW/Audi **** head
Infact when I get rid of the 205 eventually I may get myself a clean example of an early one

Oxscoob & AlanPPP have you got links to your cars if they are for sale. My wife and I are starting a hair salon but if it doesn't happen I'm buying another scoob and am favouring another UK car.

Sonic blue really is a lovely colour. I flirted with mica blue and still quite like it but it doesn't compare to 74F. Mr Hat - the car you describe sounds similar to my first car.
Oxscoob & AlanPPP - if you would PM the details I'd be grateful. Its highly likely the business is going to go ahead but if not I want to spend the cash before the wifes has another ingenious way of losing all my money for me - I don't need her help!

Buy mine for 3 and have a grand to buy toys for it!!!!!
Failing that a type R would be nice, If it was me I would go for an RB5 or a Terzo, but I like the limited build stock stuff.

Possibly thinking of selling my 99 ppp'd turbo in mica blue for around 3 grand if your interested, fdsh, 1 owner, prodrive handling pack and whiteline anti lift and drop links, is a weekend car, but with a 4 month old sapping my time and money, finding it hard to justify 3 cars on the drive
