Default Just Changed to a De-Cat

hi guys,

i bought this my05 uk spec sti impreza 2 weeks ago and just fitted a buddy club de-cat downpipe. We got a basic map on it, but it defo needs tweaking when we have time, so i'm just going to be taking it handy till chippedire have time to get a proper job done next week.

In order for this sti to see 330-350bhp reliabley what else needs to be done next?
PS i don't want the car to be any louder than standard if at all possible.

I'd say you'll find it fairly difficult to get what want (power wise) and still have the car as quiet as a standard one.

I'd suggest a decat centre section with a resonator, and change the backbox to a Genome possibly? Also, Walbro 255 fuel pump and a proper remap.

Who is chippedire, is this someone who is doing the mapping or something?

Scrap that last question, I've just found their website. I would suggest you get a specialist Scooby mapper to sort that out, its not very encouraging when the dont even list Subaru in their 'Find Your Car' menu!!

I would find out if/when any of the following are in your area:

AndrewC
AndyF
Jolly Green Monster
Pat Herborn
Bob Rawle

There are others that I'll have missed, but you get the picture.

I think this may be worth looking at Remapping N.I

Ye thats the company thats doing the mapping, I'm in southern ireland, and have had them do, a few vw's and bmw's of mine and friends.
They've also done a few sti's, CTR's, gti's and legacy's so aren't euro only tuners.

If its at full chat i don't mind if its a little bit louder, but at idle and low revs i don't want something that's drawing any more attention than the sti spoiler already does, lol!

What about air filter? Is there something that can go in, inplace of the standard unit thats better?

the only thing i found with a resonated centre section was that it made a more ""boomy"" inside the car. change to a non resonated section and the "boom" had gone, on low revs it didnt make any different to the noise levels but as soon as you up the revs/floor it then a lot louder ;-)

green filter seems to be a good choice among people

Even though you're in S.I, if any of the recognised Subaru mappers are coming over to N.I, I'm sure it would be worth contact them to see if something can be arranged.

If it was my car (and I think almost certainly the vast majority of SN users will say the same), I would only have a well know Scooby mapper doing mine.

Dont say you havent been warned

And yes, a replacement panel filter (K&N, Simota, Green Cotton etc etc) wouldnt do any harm whatsoever

With regards to the exhaust issue, I believe the STi Genome back box is pretty quiet when pottering around, similarly the Prodrive one too.

When you go for the decat centre, make sure it has the resonator as that does quieten it down a fair bit.
On my old Type R, I had a full 3" H&S decat system, after fitting it, it was so loud I spoke to H&S and they agreed to swap it over for a resonated centre, which IMO, made a noticeable different. I cant comment as to being more boomy in the cabin though, I didnt notice it.

De-res centre does eliminate some cabin boom FWIW.

Surely if the OP is looking for a quieter system outside, then the resonated centre will help achieve that, although arguably at the cost of making it a little boomier in the cabin? One is offset by the other, so it's whichever is most important to the individual I suppose

Hmm, will look into the exhaust.

Another friend has a bug sti with full system, and its certainly acceptably quiet, must see what his is.

Why do scoobies seem to be this mysterious entity when it comes to mapping over any other car??
They're still just a fuel injected turbo charged motor.
Or is there something else that makes them so different to an evo, R32, S3 etc....

Because with the scoobies, there are subtle nuances associated with tuning the engine that if they arent fully understood, and what is applied to one make Hmm... lets say like VW Golf R32 or VW.. Sorry .. Audi S3 (are they turbo'd??) then the chances are, due to the nature of fiddling with scooby engines... its likely to go pop on you very quickly. Take your time, get a proper Scooby mapper, that literally 100's of people on here have used and will continue to use, and you're likely to hang on to the current engine that little bit longer.

In short, if messed about with without the experience to back it up , they go pop without too much trouble at all.

It'd be nice if one of the more technical guys actually gave you a more in depth reasoning. I'd just like to point out, I'm not very technical, hence why I leave that to the people that really understand these cars.

If you had a Ferrari or Lambo etc, would you take it to get fixed at a Kia Garage...? No, you'd want the guys that are experts. Sure, a Kia mechanic will understand the 'basics' behind the car (to some extent anyway) but they dont have the specialist knowledge.. get it?

PS. A scoob ownership most def isnt anything like VAG ownership (in terms of tuning especially), but as they say: pays yer money, takes yer chances...

Exactly, if someone here does know whats so special about them I'd love to hear what it is that makes them different.

The tuner from ChipperIre has done alot of custom tuning for high powered VAG stuff (250-280 bhp hybrid turbo 2.0L tdi's, 350-380 bhp 1.8T A3's and is currently helping out with a porsche racing team in the uk)
Actually his in silverstone this weekend at some 6 hour endurance thing

So i don't doubt that he knows what he's at, but if there's something "different" about the scoobs, then i'd love to know.

Thanks for the other, exhaust an filter tips though.
