My wheels have been destroyed by brake dust and as i need new tyres i'm going to get them re-finished(again)

Problem is, i have this dilema

Do i get them painted in the standard colour or anthracite. i have been told that anthracite is a powder coat and will last longer whereas the standard colour is a lacquer finish and will chip and won't clean as well.

i quite like the antrhracite finish but will this put people and dealers off when i come to sell it. Because the RB5 is a limited edition, should i stick with the standard colour?

Scott,

Just get them re-coated in the same colour as they are now. I would suggest that an RB5 would need grey wheels to keep the originality of the car. Powder coating would be the best way to go, but remember that if they get scratched, you can't polish the scrathc out like a painted and laquered wheel.

Hi Scott, I don't think it will make much difference to paint the wheels but would be a good idea to try and keep the colour similar. I repainted mine recently but noone could tell me the correct paint code (not even Subaru UK or the dealer!) so found a close match - a Rover Grey Metallic.

imo powder coating would last longer than paint but the finish would not be anywhere as
shiny/gleamy as a paint finish.

I wouldn't worry about the dealers when you come to sell it. Even if it were perfect, they'll insult you when they make an offer.

With regard to private buyers, there's bound to be someone with the same taste as you, so the value shouldn't be affected.

At the end of the day, spray whichever colour you like the most

What did you actually ask for when you had the wheels re-done? What was involved in painting them?

Be gentle guys I'm a newbie!

I've been using the EBC greenstuff (kevlar) brake pads, I find they dont dust up as quickly as conventional pads, also the residue is lots easier to clean off and it doesn't attack the paint/alloy as badly.

Found then to be pretty good stoppers too.

 

Ozzy, I got them done at Jet Tyres (Benfleet). They remove the tyres and send them to Spit-and-Polish. Think they were £40 ea incl balancing! They'll repair them for the same cost and paint any colour if you give them the paint code - again same cost! Took 3 days as well.

they do look the biz when there all polished. How do you find the Toyo tyres compared to the Pzero that would have been fitted as standard. I'm needing some new boots pretty soon. Bridgestones are very expensive so I've been considering the Toyo's or GY Eagle F1's.

Bridgestones are'nt that expensive, i have just paid £480 with metal valves but no fitting.
if you want the best performance from a tyre you have only got one choice(and stay well clear of eagle F1s)

I was quoted £504 inc. fitting/balancing. Seems about average for the Bridgestones. The GY Eagle's were only £360!!

sorry but can't really remember what the P-zeros were like! I do get less lift-off oversteer and the Toyos are very progressive. I wasn't looking for ultimate grip 'cos that's no fun but on the other hand I haven't tried any other brand on my car. The tyres are lasting fairly well but I might try another brand next time. What ever I get I'll just adjust my driving style to suit.
