Default Intercooler spray

Hi,

I have the intercooler spray on the version 8 sti, I can convert it to run automatic on boost pressure for a tad over £20 is it worth while doing?
I will retain the manual button to squirt as well.

Nope, it is not as simple as that, the JDM cars work off the inlet temps which works far better than off the boost, for instance in hot weather your boost will be lowered by the ecu to protect the engine, hence that idea is out of the window, and in cold weather, well....

The only sure way is to buy a JDM car with said auto ic spray if you want it to run properly.

Ok thought as much seen as it was going to be so cheap to do.
Where do the JDM cars pick up the temp from?

Its all controlled via the ecu which is different to the UK STI's, and no, they are not compatable

I wouldn't go to the extent of swapping ecu's anyway for just that.
It was only a thought as it was a cheap mod if it was any good.

Tony is that true of the Bugeye model too? I've been messing around for ages trying to see what the spray was triggered to fire on. If it is inlet temps it might explain how I can use 4 litres of water in a spirited summer evening drive.

if your a wiz at electronics may be done fairly cheaply, using the existing inlet temp gauge signal, some control logic and a voltfree relay, then wiring the Manual I/C switch it.

If possible, a data monitoring using the OBD 2 port, which can trigger a voltfree relay by inlet charge temp (Not sure if the latest PSi3 or an Apexi unit can do this) and run I/C manual switch in parrallel through it.

If you do it over CAN, anything is possible.
It could be done with the charge temp at a set figure or above, throttle position and boost pressure.

For what it cost it maybe worth it then. I have been looking at adding a temp sensor to the intercooler wired back a temp control module.
The only thing that I am thinking is I may need to wire round the timer relay other wise it wont spray again till it clears the dead band of the switch.

Just looking I know its best with the temperature probe in the air flow but do you think it will work with it just mounted on the intercooler? Surely this get just as hot.
I'm thinking log the inlet temps via obd and monitor temp of intercooler to find the difference between them. That way if there is an offset I can adjust the switch to suit.

I would have thought that the best place for a temp probe would be as clost to in the inlet manifold as possible?

Mine is "automatic" in that it uses the boost pressure sensor switch feature of my PSI3, through a DIY relay box with it's own switching if my water tank gets low- not including the PSI3 cost me about £8 in parts from Maplin.
