How do all you estate drivers compare the car to the saloon?
How does the performance/handling compare?
Insurance cheaper?
Cheers

puff i know you have the best 5dr.
As an owner 20 months of 5door then changing I can confirm on the road the 5dr flexes like a pig but is a flexible familily machiche. However (considering the security net) the 4 door (or coupe) is just as pratical unless you deliver 28" wide screen tellies for a living!
summary 5 door very useful (al times I miss it!)
saloon (well now I have a P1) at times I miss the boot but have a fleet of commercials to pick up me crap anyway!
driving saloon wins alround abilites 5 door wins hans down!
Puff do you wish to buy a p1 wheelset?

Sorry..... <serious mode on>
I think the market for a 5-door is different.
Serious petrolheads will always favour the 4-door with its 10mm extra track, rigidity, flared arches etc. etc.
Before I bought my Scoob, I was looking at an Audi allroad, or Volvo XC. Then I decided I wanted to go carry less junk, go faster, and build a new garage with the £££ saved.
Summary: PPP'd 5-door is definitely the "thinking hooligan's budget small estate".

I also have a 5-door, yes it flexes a bit more than the 4-door, but is not for the extra space! Imagine you with a 4-door scooby passing by a 996 Carrera in a B-road, imagine the look in his face ... Now imagine that same face if you pass him with a debadged wagon!
Ok all this to say :
Great~taste~Bloke : I am interested in your P1 wheels

i bought a brand new 5door turbo uk std on march 1st 2000 and loved it to bits after a mk3 16v golf and carried on until i was aware af evo mag, body roll, better handling, more go!, all the other things! Then I test drove a P1! The 5 door ,Ihad it ppp'd after 12 months is a fine car the four door and even more so the 2 door is so much more rewarding as a driving machine!
You have to decide which is the best compromise for you. Perhaps it's not even a Scoob!

Lots more road noise in the wagons.
On the upside...fit a tasty exhaust and you have all the ICE you need
If the MY01 is "fugly", the MY01 Wagon is "fuglier"

It has got to be the 5 door everytime, as it is the ultimate "Stealth Machine" .
People generally associate estates with slow drivers, but when they get one that shows them a clean pair of heels, it is a superb feeling.
It even surprises some fellow 4dr Scooby owners when they see a 5dr leave them behind or stick with them!!

I've had a MY99 5dr and now have a wrx wagon. I have to say that the wrx wagon is a big improvement on the outgoing 5dr in terms of handling and in terms of useable load space at the back.
for me its the only option as I cart loads of mountain bikes around the place. I like it for the same reasons as pslewis above and I would say that it *is* a drivers car.
In fact, after taking a subaru legacy 2.0 ltr estate out at a Town & country Knockhill Scoob day and kept up with the turbo cars - I'd say it was a beautifully balanced drivers car as well. wolf in sheeps clothing that one - pity they dopn't sells its evil big brother twin turbo.

Has to be the wagon with kids. No way I could get all the junk in for xmas at the parents in a 4 door. Plus the 5 door is a little more anonymous on the road, unlikely to be such a big target for the thieving scotes. (I hope)
Edites to say ******* not scotes

If you want handling - then its got to be the 5 door
If you want to not be a thieves target - the 5 door gets it again
If you want to surprise supercar drivers - the 5 door is the one again
If you want to carry anything more than your handbag - then its 5 doors
If you want to go faster - its the 5 door (due to the better handling)
IF you are confident in yourself (and dont need to show off) - its the 5 door
Put simply, if you are low in self esteem and want to look big get a 4 door with spoliers as big as the London Eye - if you are a SERIOUSLY cool dude who doesnt need to parade get a 5-door

if you're talking MY00 or older 5dr, not sure about them new ones, look a bit weedy compared to the 4dr. Then again the only fuglies I've liked are the UK300 and the STi Type UK Prodrive version.
