For the weather, the food, pub-closingtimes, the government, the insurance;

In Holland the insurance companies don't care if you drive a 280 bhp Impreza or a Benz C-class 200Diesel, the costprize is the same so the insurance-fee is the same. Speeding penalties? We don't have a 'points' system and there's no way a company can find out how many times you've been arrested speeding drunk, driving in the opposite direction while been blown.
A standard MY01 WRX insures for about 580 pounds/year for a guy like me, 35, 12 years no claims. It does need an alarm, because it's an AWD. So does a Justy AWD.

Here in New Zealand, the insurance is rated differently from car to car, but my 1998 Legacy GTB is insured for the equivilant of £12550 for just £155 p.a.

The excess I need to pay in the event of a claim is £102 for both my wife (age 25) and I (age 33). I was surprised that it was so cheap, as one headlight in the new GTB's costs £730.... Maybe the insurance company hasn't had a chance to work that one out yet?

You are correct. Maurice Gatsonides (or something like that).

Commonly known in the UK as something slightly less savoury.....

Cool

That's right, mr Gatsonides was a rallycar driver before he started inventing. I've got a picture from him in one of my favorite cars, a Citroen DS. They used these cars in rallies... haha, seems funny now.

About me, i do not drink and drive. It was a joke. An obvious one i thought Luke. And forgive me for my bad grammar, ME ALIEN!, i ment being blown stoned.

The point was that the rules for speeding/insurance/tax/etc differ so much from country to country.

Last time I looked, the murder rate in Amsterdam was greater than that of New York!

Hunk, you have conveniently forgotten the following disadvantages of living in Holland...

1) Crazy rates of car and luxury taxes on new cars, which makes them more expensive to buy than in UK
2) The truly horrendous cost of road tax
3) High rates of income tax
4) All the roads are flat and congested
5) Dutch 'g's are unpronouncable
6) Not as many IT contracts

Still a lovely country though, and I'm actually engaged to be married to a Dutch lass.

Cheers,

Gary.
